"If your pet was chipped with a Virbac chip in 2010 approxmately 200,000 are at risk of failing. If your chip starts with 978 or 8260978 then call 01359 256032. It will be replaced free of charge."

Copied from a letter I received this morning and many others have recently received, going by mutterings on other forums and my vet's unsurprised response when I called today. Got to take D in to be scanned tomorrow to see if hers still works, R's is a Petlog one thankfully, though I've only just found out that Virbac are now using Petlog's database and therefore my info is all out of date anyway!

Sprocket is going in this evening to be scanned - really hope he is one of the lucky ones as I am not loving the thought of having him chipped again

I've scanned several dogs with letters this morning -all scanned ok.
More worrying is my gelding's chip cannot be read and is a Virbac one with the dodgy start number!

My dog's chip begins with 978, but she was chipped in 2003! I haven't had a letter - anyone know if I should have received one?

Thanks

I found that my Star's Virbac microchip wasn't working about 6 weeks ago, it was implanted in August 2010. I work at a vets and we've had about 3 other dogs that the chip has stopped working all implanted about the same time, 1 was due to go to Europe a few weeks later and we routinely scanned it about 4 weeks ago. I'd tried to phone Virbac about the issue, but could never get to speak to the person that they said I needed to speak to, even after leaving my name and phone number I never got a returned call!

I think you'll find they'll pay the vet.
I asked about my horse which would be a call out plus chip plus passport and they would pay it all.

That's good to know s4s. :)

It's a good job the chip is still working as apparently the letter I received should have had a form attached for the vet to fill in for the free replacement - mine had no such form, just told me to call the helpline if any issues.

Interesting to note that the Virbac chip was quite hard to scan - took her ages to find and only shows up if the scanner is passed directly over it, whereas Ricoh's Petlog one bleeps if you wave the scanner vaguely in his direction.

Sat R on the scales while we were there, he has lost 2kg since coming back into work and looks all the better for it, he was getting a bit plump over the summer. :)

I've got my own scanner so regularly check my lots chips but we often deal with members who have gone abroad on holiday and had to leave their pets behind in quarantine because the chip has failed or moved and customs couldn't find it. Is so worth getting a regular check especially for movement.

Hope all your chips are still active. Are they offering to remove and replace chips no longer working or just to insert another one?
