Bruce has got mud fever...looking around, apparently very dilute virkon is good...soak in cotton wool, bandage to leg, rinse then dry off.

Any experiences? Or any other tips? Please! I am lost without Dermobian!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I wouldn't use Virkon on my horse. It is incredibly powerful. During the swine fever outbreak, we used to wash the vets wellies in it at the practice I was working at as it killed everything. Have you had a look at www.mudfever.net I got some of their stuff last winter and it was brilliant. Also no need to wash legs which just compromises the inflammed skin even more.

Good God - never heard of that one. I'd be too terrified of using too!

B's has all cleared up now, I used vaseline to soften it up, then I made my own cream - dermobian (I still have some, but I'm sure dermoline would suffice), protocon and vaseline mixed together - works a treat!

She was on box rest for a couple of days, but has been out in a dry paddock (I know I very lucky) since and all 3 affected legs have gone back to normal and the worst is looking great - just treating the wound where the infection got in now.

Good luck.

Horse on work experience in May has Mud Fever, but it was caused by wet grass!!!!!

If he's in pain, give him some bute, and look round your shops of Zinc and Caster cream. It's a pain to get off hands, but really helps with mud fever and it waterproof so stays on for quite some time! Horse backsides are quite a good place to wipe it off your hands

Hope Bruce gets better soon.

One of the best things I have found for mud fever is Sudocrem nappy rash cream (basically mudfever is the same sort of thing as nappyrash). You can get it from any chemist and it is less than a fiver. After you have softened and removed the scabs and the leg is completely dry, smother in sudocrem, it works unbelievably fast.

You know that Sudocrem (zinc & caster oil) can antagonise nappy rash don't you? Tuppence had an allergic reaction to it last week - bloody scarey!!!

I have used very diluted virkon for this and it had no ill effect and cleared up the mud fever. She is a pretty tough irish mongrel though - it might be too harsh for the finer more sensitive types. She doesn't often get mud fever though. I use keratex powder winter & summer and I swear by it. I wouldn't want to use the virkon on a regular basis and not if there are actual open sores (hers were just crusty bits) as i think it would be painful for them.
