I have been advised by my vet to put my mare on a vit b supplement, have googled and come up with brewers yeast, has anyone else used anything else vitamin B rich

I've heard of people feeding marmite to their horses, which I suppose is like a sticky version of brewers yeast (not sure if they spread it on toast!). I bought some brewers yeast from holland & barrett in powder form - it said de-bittered, which suggests it must normally have a bitter taste. Ponies not too impressed with it in their feed so start with small amounts until they get used to the taste - I also put apple juice in their feed if I'm trying to hide something medicinal and they end up licking the bowl clean. Sweet-itch supplements are often vitamin B based, I'm trying something called Sweet Relief and I think Cavalesse, available from the vets also contains B vits.

I really wanted to get both of my horses on to Brewers Yeast - my warmblood veteran because it helps with digestion and my Knabstrupper mare because her skin was a bit flakey when I got her.

The mare is a total glutton and will eat anything but even she left her feed when I started them on BY. So I had to introduce it very very gradually, almost a pin head at a time until they accepted that over a weeks or two, then very slowly working up to a teaspoon and then gradually up to a 50 ml scoop each per day.

So keep at it and go slowly, its worth perservering for.

Years ago I was a vegan and used to eat loads of the stuff (human grade - found a place that sold really delish tasting version) - I swear it kept me going as its a real super food.

*slinks away in embarassment at confession*... x
