Vitamin E help

My horse has dropped a little weight, I’d like to try upping vitamin E.

He has decent diet / forage / checks etc.

He gets 3,000iu of synthetic vitamin E from forage plus Laminae balancer, which is 1,500iu usable as halve for synthetic.

His hard feed provides
195iu a day of natural vitamin E
1020 iu of synthetic vitamin E (therefore 510 iu if halve as synthetic

So 705 iu a day.

Making a total I think of 2205 iu of available vitamin E.

Is that enough? Or is it worth adding more?

5ml more of FP synthetic vitamin E would give a further 2,000 iu

https://forageplus.co.uk/product/natural-vitamin-e-for-horses/

Or 10ml would give a further 4,000 iu.

Thoughts?

It's really a game of trial and error. I've been giving one of mine 6000 iu but I've just dropped it to 4000 and I'll see how she goes. I may need to increase it again until the Spring

I feed 4000iu in winter to my gelding who drops weight if I don't. 2000iu is fine for him in summer.

Sorry to jump on your thread but after being recommended vit e on another thread and not seeing a huge difference in three weeks at 2000, two quick queries for those who are knowledgeable on it - how long would you expect it to take to see results and I read elsewhere about vit e poisoning, is that something to be aware of or can we up it gradually (I think the FP website suggests 10k) without worrying too much?

I’d do it the other way round if trying vitamin E for a problem. I’d start at 6-8,000 see if notice a benefit and then reduce amount and see if keep benefit. Agree I’ve read under 10,000 safe.

My vet told me last year that he wouldn't want my horse on a high dose for months at a time unless I saw an improvement.

What were you trying to change Squeak? If you're treating PSSM type symptoms then I'd try a big whack, but apparently some horses can't absorb it and do far better on the Nano E version.

Mine is one if those. I saw no difference at all on the powdered oil versions but the water soluble nano e makes is a game changer for him. He only has 2000 iu a day (as a maintenance dose, more if he's doing increased activity) because he has no winter grazing.

Jesus wept, I've just seen the price! It would cost £2000 a year to keep my guy on that if I assume it's three times as potent as what he gets now! I'm glad he doesn't seem to need it.

ETA think I got my sums wrong but it's certainly expensive!

It's not cheap is it. I pay just over £80 for the 450 ml and it should last 56 days at 2000 in (8 ml) a day if I've worked it out correctly. Sounds about right, I think I order a new bottle at slightly more than one monthly intervals. So it's cheaper than his Prascend!

Im giving it a go for a horse that is looking a bit poor. In the summer he lives on grass and a balancer and looks great but I’m pulling my hair out with him this winter to get condition on him.

Has anyone had trouble with them eating feed with it in? Mine does occasionally not clean his bucket but he’s guaranteed to leave a lot if I add Vit E

I started using it last night. At first my horse wouldn't touch his food so I added a bit more to it. He had eaten up by this morning and also ate his breakfast. He wasn't keen though!

I did the same last February after a vet check for illness found nothing, and 4000iu worked an almost overnight miracle on weight and muscle strength. I now keep him on 2 in summer and 4 in winter, just in case.

Thank you. I’ll give him a week at 2 as I had him on the gold label stuff and have just ordered the forage plus one and then I’ll up it to the 4 for a couple of weeks and see how he gets on.

I used to buy human grade Vit E from pharma horse, not sure what cost that works out at? It made a big difference to him.

Yes it is

Interesting, I’ve not fed the forage plus Vit E as a separate for a few years, as just feed it in their balancers and haven’t supplemented for a while. But I always thought it was tasteless and easily eaten when I have fed it as a separate in past.

I currently feed 50ml of beetroot powder (v tasty and not high sugar) with mixed with the supplements and balancer I feed to ensure are eaten.

Do you know why? Is over feeding a risk of doing harm? What dose does your vet consider high? 4/6/8/10,000?

Like many, many things, it's toxic in high volume. It's stored in the liver and if it exceeds what the liver can store, it causes issues. I don't know the specifics and my vet didn't give a top level, he was happy with me saying I was going to test 4000iu for 3 months.

I have an unopened bottle of KER Nano-E (bought for horse that I lost suddenly) if anyone would make use of it?

My "issue" with the Pharmahorse Vit E was that it is synthetic.

I've since found a natural Vit E powder here, but it isn't exactly cheap and does contain MSM, which I am/horse is fine with.

Edit: Both Pharmahorse and the one I now use contain MSM, some may prefer not to feed MSM for whatever reason(s) I suppose. I've also seen Vitamin E oil combined with linseed oil (HorseFlex).

Would someone clever be able to tell me how much this works out - I feed Blue Chip Lami light balancer and it has
Vitamin E/3a700 270 mg/kg
in it.
Horse has 500 grams a day of Lami Light.
Someone who knows him and saw him suggested Vitamin E for him a couple of months ago. How does the calculation for Lami Light work out against what a horse weighing around 520 lbs would need?
He is on chaff, hay and grass and the balancer.

I am useless at science and don't understand figures at all.

Thanks.

I will gladly buy it plus postage - you can't get it at the moment, stocks have run out. I have some on order but getting worried now that it isnt going to come on time.
