Can anyone help??

I really want to experience a working ranch in america, but all I seem to be finding are volunteer work where you have to pay £1000 plus!

Is it me or is the whole point of volunteer work that you give you time and hard work in return for a place to sleep and some food??

I really want to do this, Im not proud, I dont want to sleep in some posh ranch with amazing food, I just want to experience the real life working ranch and live that way of life for a few weeks or months, and pay my way by helping in ANY way I can!!

Does anyone on here no of anywhere or anyone that lives in the US of A???

All help would be great,

Thanks

Interested in responses as I'd been thinking about doing somethings similar - have you thought about the camp america route, where a lot of it is subsidised and you get a wage? There are plenty of ranch camps out there

A friend of mine has recently just left the UK to pursue her dream of being a cowgirl! She didn't want to pay huge fees, so googled ranches in America (not holiday, just working ranches) and emailed ones which took her fancy. She found the best approach were to contact ranches that take on local students for a season. She has found a great ranch which she will be staying on for a few months, she gets bed, board and a horse for the duration!

Try Chico Basin Ranch in Colorado. It used to be a guest ranch but now is just a working one - I begged to go there for a few days last year (as a guest) and rode up to ten hours a day fixing fences, moving cattle, etc. It was brilliant and they'd have me back to help in a shot (am prob going again this year). People are really friendly and although I paid for my accom, they also took on students for various lengths of time.
It was a fantastic experience - 87,000 acres means lots of hard work but stood at a watering hole, in the searing heat, surrounded by 1000 bellowing cattle is not something you're likely to forget in a hurry...
