Hi all,

I'm wondering if any of you out there with horses that have had or have ulcers/upset tummies would be interested in trying out a GI healthy treat I've made? My guy was diagnosed with some serious ulcers which have been treated, but that got me thinking that I'd like to be feeding him treats which were part of his no sugar no cereal grain diet and that also contained ingredients to soothe his tummy. In any case I'm a bit of a geek (and also a scientist :) ) so I mixed up some treats that only have soothing ingredients in them, figured out how to make them into a biscuit etc etc and tested them out on him. He seems to really like them as do the horses at the yard I've given them to.

But I'd be interested to see if horses generally find them tasty or if mine is just a piggy for any treat??!! So I'm looking for people that would like to test them out. I'd be happy to send some to anyone who is interested. Just send me a PM with your details. I'd just like some feedback as to whether or not your horse likes them. I've done two flavours: mint and fenugreek.

Thanks!

Happy to help - mine has had ulcers, is off sugar and cereals... and is SUPER fussy, so if she likes them, they're bound to be a hit! (Presumably you'll be ok to provide ingredients list?) :)

Definitely happy to provide ingredients - will send the list with the treats if that's okay. Just PM me your details if you haven't already. :)

Sounds like a fab idea, and well done for having a go at it! Our fussy ex racer TB is due to be scoped next month, showing all the typical ulcer symptoms. He's keen on mint though, and won't eat his chaff unless added, so I'd love to give them a go. I'll pm my details if that's ok. Many thanks.

Thanks everyone for all of the great messages. Looking forward to the feedback! Going to have to whip up a few more batches, but I could probably fit in a few more people, so if anyone else is interested let me know.

I'd be happy to try them on Fabio. He often has upset tummy an can get gas colic when moved paddock. He does have mild shivers though so is on the high oil/low sugar diet for EPSM.

I'd definitely be happy to send you some, just PM me your details. There aren't any added sugars in them, but there is oil - so might be fairly complimentary to his diet! :)

A positive reception so far! Have stuck with trying the mint flavour because mine has a habit of eating something for a few days and then deciding actually she didn't like it after all, so thought I'd go with one flavour at a time. She's not mugging me for them yet, but that may come in time. Each of the other horses I've tried them on have eaten them too. Will let you know how the fenugreek ones go!

Well my treats arrived - and very well packaged too I might add :-)

Every single one of mine devoured both flavours, from the very picky shetland who I cannot feed treats to as he is so suspicious, to my fussy TB. The TB was literally mugging me, nosing into my pockets for more. I am very impressed! The treats are really well 'baked' and hold their shape, don't crumble, and are big enough to keep your fingers safe if you use them for stretching exercises. If these were commercially available I'd definitely buy them.

Well done HD15, I reckon the products are goers and hope you get to take the idea further. :-)

Hi would love to speak to you!!! my horse last week was diagnoised with glandular ulsers she is on grastoguard anti biotics and 20 tablets a day, how long did it take you to notice a diffrence in your horse when on medication?? mine been on it a week and still getting colic symptons, but i would love to try your new new treats!!!! xxxxxxxxxx

I'm really glad to hear the treats well liked! And from such picky eaters. :)

I guess I'd thought a bit about whether or not I'd try and take this further but the responses on here and privately have been really positive so I guess I probably should! ;). I threw up a FB page for any further developments as that's not really something for HHO. (https://www.facebook.com/DrDsTastyTreats).

Looking forward to hearing how everyone else gets on. Philamena, a few people have actually said theirs preferred the fenugreek flavour so hopefully your mare will like those too.

Definitely feel free to PM me with your details and I will send you some of the treats. Mine took probably 2 weeks to seem like he felt better. They rescoped him at 4 weeks and the ulcers (a lot of grade 3's) were pretty much gone and then he had another 2 weeks of GG.

Hi Dont know if Im too late to take up your offer, but I have an ex racer who has had nothing but bother with his ulcers, but after advice from top Spec, we have him on a no cereal/grain diet and it is doing wonders for him. After all the postitive reports on your treats, I would be interested in trying them as he can turn his nose up at certain things.

Can't quote as am on phone. Fuzzle, it took my mare at least 3 weeks to show improvement & actually first time around many symptoms remained even though we knew the stomach was clear from rescoping, but her symptoms were different so not so relevant here. If you're getting colicky symptoms it may be that there's an issue further back in the gut, beyond the stomach. What are the tablets you've been given? Are they Antepsin (sucralfate)?

thanks hun yes its Antespin sucrafate, i had all her overies scanned etc has i thought it was hormonal all is 100pc there but we put her on regumate just to eliminate that problem xxx

Has any one had behaviour problems with there horse having ulcers??? mine refuses to go forward, leaps and bucks but more totally arching her back and leaping when asking for canter, her attitude is awful trys biting and warning to kick, i have not told her off just incase it is a pain of the ulcers, had back, teeth, tack, scans everything done even went to a top pro yard has i thought it was my riding but hey they said i was a good rider and not me. xxxxx

If you do a search you'll find loads of threads. Mine was almost all behavioural. Pain causes all kinds of reactions. The other thing I would really recommend is getting a couple of really good osteo assessments before and after the stomach pain has gone. The ulcers often set up muscular pain patterns and vice versa in a cycle: ulcers often cause and are "re-caused" by muscular pain elsewhere.
The antepsin is good as it helps hind gut ulceration, whereas the others only help the stomach. I would be adding in a high quality probiotic (like protexin gut balancer) but feeding as far from the anti biotics as possible. If you haven't already, take out all starchy foods, all molasses in the feed. A lot of people also find bicarbonate of soda really helps the colicky / ulcery gut.
