VW 3.5t boxes - what are they like?

I have one and I love it, totally reliable and at the bigger end of the 3.5ton lorries, they can be converted to 4.5tons if need be.

Downside is that, like most 3.5 tonners, they get blown about a bit in the wind, but not nearly so much as say a Transit 3.5ton.

I think they are lovely, solid reliable little boxes, and if I was in the market for an older 3.5T they would be top of my list.

However the downside of them being so solid is their weight. You will not have payload for 2 horses.

Hence my question on payload....they look heavy!!

I would only be transporting one 15.3 tb, so would really need payload to cover that plus tack/water etc. I've seen some that say they have living, but how can they be under the weight!?

The ones with living are pony boxes so not suitable for you.

With just one horse the LWB forward facing ones (with storage over luton) should be okay for one horse + water + tack.

The one I had was 800kg payload, but best to pop whatever you are interested in on a weighbridge before you buy

i've got one (for sale!) it has roughly a ton of payload.. so plenty for one horse + humans + tack etc.. its a lovely little box!! mine has been v realiable. as it's old, engine is v basic so very little to go wrong with it.. if you can find a good one i would def recommend!!

Ah such a shame I cant get anything now, as you are half way between me and my parents so would be within my search area! Without being rude, how much are you looking for yours, just so I get an idea of course!

Realistically I cant get anything until next May time as I need to sort the drive out to our stables first otherwise I would have no where to keep a box!

i'm looking for around the £2300 mark for mine.. as i said its quite old (1983) but it is in good nick, has been a fab box for me for the last 5.5yrs. i'm going to get a trailer and 4x4 as i don't do as much competing as i used to.

VWLT35,40 & 50's all very good solid boxes. I have LT50 and it's 5 tonne. Does me exceptionally well horse wise - can have huge one or large one and small one, two middle sized or 3 small ones. Payload is fab and that includes living as well.

Engines are easy to work on, slower lorries but very solid and reliable. I dont mind being slower as long as I get there. They give a lovely no roll solid ride and nice to drive too even the older ones. Definately recommend and servicing and parts are not mad either.
