Has anyone used one of these?
I change jobs and so loose my company car at the end of December. We have an isuzu trooper to tow with at the moment but have decided that we are going to go down to one car for me to drive to work with and tow the horses. Therefore the old trooper is going (it isn't economical enough to be the main car).
We've been looking at the Touareg but don't know anyone that has actually towed with one and I really want to know how it does.
I have an Ifor 505 and tow a 15.2 TB (540kg) and a 15.1 irish pony (450kg).

Any ideas of other suitable vehicles would be good.
Thank you

Discovery is good. I like the older style. The diesel is reasonably economical and it drives well, so long as you don't want to go over seventy miles an hour, and much happier cruising at sixty. I haven't towed with it, but lots of people do.

We test drove one when they first came out. Great car to drive and believe it will easily tow a trailer with two horses (or so the sales guy told us). However it didn't have much space behind the seats so I stuck with my huuuge Explorer.

I had one as a courtesy car and LOVED it, didnt want to give it back. Never towed with it, but Im sure its more than capable

Love the Touareg - still trying to persuade OH over a Range Rover sport - have heard from a friend who occasionally tows a plant trailer with his that they are a bit thirsty tho.

that's the one thing i'm concerned about.
i will be driving about 60 miles per day along little roads and dual carriage-ways) so I don't want it to be too thirsty....
however the car needs to be big/heavy enough to tow 2 horses and trailer!
hmmm - decisions!

Hi there

I have a 3L VW Touareg & tow regularly with it. It tows like an absolute dream & is generally a lovely car to drive on the days that you don't tow. Thirsty? Well, yes, fairly thirsty but considerably better than the Cherokee Jeep I towed with before. When I'm towing, I average 19/20mpg & when I'm not, it's probably around 26/28mpg. I think the newer ones (2007 model onwards) are more slightly more fuel efficient again. I love mine & would definitely recommend.

thank you!
do you think the 2.5 would be as good as the 3L to tow?
i know its not going to be terribly economic - but i would just like to get a car that does its job well and is as efficient as i can get!

Based on the 2004 model 2.5 TDi (was only spec I could find quickly) it says:

Gross weight (kg): 2850
Kerb weight (kg): 2209
Max. braked trailer weight (kg): 3500
Max. unbraked trailer weight (kg): 750

Hope this helps.

Go for the 3.0 the 2.5 is a bit underpowered. Don't be lulled into the illusion that a bigger engine is more thirsty it will be, a small engine working hard will drink more than a big one on top of the job. Also the 3.0l will be easier to sell when the time comes. The 4x4 market is totally dead at mo so it is a buyers market so haggle hard and don't be afraid to walk out the door. My wife nearly killed me a few years ago because she really wanted the car we were trying to do a deal on, and me and the dealer were £1000 apart so I said no deal and got up and put my coat on and started walking to the door. I had only done 5 steps and he caved in. Also NEVER tell them what your budget is always say 'as little as possible' likewise if you are looking for finance never tell them what you can afford every month. Do the deal first and then sort the finance, and get some quotes for personal loans first to compare.

BTW Proper range rovers are for no money at the moment. I have seen 50000 milers on Autotrader for £15000. thet was a £60000 car new!

Good luck

Mark

Hi, have you thought about a VW Tiguan? It's a bit smaller than a Toureg but our 2.0TDI has a tow limit of 2.2kg and is really econmical, I get 39mpg in rush hour traffic and it doen't drop below 35mpg when. I only have 1 horse and an Ifor trailer but pulls it easily and can't recommend enough.

I just wanted to second the comment about not going for a 2.5L. The 3L drives far, far better than the 2.5. I test drove both & was amazed by how big a difference there was between them. There is a woman at our yard who has the 2.5 & always comments on how much she regrets not getting the 3L when she comes in mine.

Happy shopping!
