Waddesdon Ride this Sunday

Might just see me setting off when you are coming back then, well if you go fast that is. Say hello if you recognise Harvey :)

we are not fast at all in fact we are normally really slow and take longer than everyone else as we go round at a leisurely pace.

Me neither - we did the BHS one at Southill in October and it took us about 3 hours to do 10 miles!
I am going on my own, so a bit nervous, but really looking forward to it. Have fun!

we did the high wycombe one and it took us three hours and was 10 miles but we were held up by an ambulance as someone had fallen off - at that point my friend and I were glad our horses were slow and steady types.

It also depends how hilly it is as well as my friends horse does not like going down steep hills so has to go quite slowly.

I think the weather might not be great though as rain is forecast.

I seem to remember it was a little hilly at one point and I too will be taking it slowly for those as Harvey too is not confident going downhill. He was a chronic tripper before I took his shoes off and although he trips no more than any other clumsy horse now, he (and I) are still very careful going downhill. Weather looking a little better for Sunday now :)

Its the best of all the sponsored rides in the area IMO. Its a bit longer and with some lovely open ground. Just watch out for the young kids cavalry charging off at the start! Once past that quite soon theres a lovely curving uphill along a hedge where you can let the horse have a pipe opener and that settles them for the rest of the ride.

Best part is galloping up the hill towards the house, amazing views!

I really miss that one now have moved to NE Scotland tho dont miss the stressful hacking and abusive drivers which made up the rest of my week's riding!

Have a good one !

I hope you enjoyed it. We were a bit late as had loading problems, thankfully mine would almost load himself.

Fantastic ride, wonderful going and did the 12 mile ride in 2 hour 20 minutes with some beautiful canters. My 13.2 new forest giving the 17.2 irish draft one of my friends was on a run for him money.

We were quite a distinctive group as I was on my 13.2 bay new forest, one of my friends was on 17.2 irish draft and the other on 15.2 blagdon cob.

I hope the person who fell off and needed the air ambulance was ok.

Hope the faller was ok- we finished and saw a massive queue at the start as they had held everyone- someone said it was at the 2nd fence..

We went at 10.29 :)
Had a lovely ride but the fences were ridiculously small IMO 12" of spindly rail is an accident looking for somewhere to happen..
OH and io having fun leading a friend over one of the larger ;) ones :)

Yes I think it was the first set of jumps as we rode past someone lying on the ground with a steward with them one of my friends is a doctor so asked if they required help but they said an ambulance was on its way.

What's Waddeson like? Im in aylesbury Would love to do all these rides next year with new horse but not sure which ones to do.

whichever other ones you do, def do Waddesdon, it's great! jumps are tiddly but I like that! views are to die for, when else do you get the chance to trample over the Rothschild's 'hood' ? :-)))

I was told the person who fell broke their pelvis, so the hold up was for the air ambulance to pick them up. Was very surprised at a jump being only metres from the start! A little disappointing for us as also one of our group also had a fall, so we ended up being the last to get back even though we cut it short to 8 miles. And to cap it all the photographer was only at the last set of jumps on the long route, so didn't even get a photo! That said, it is a lovely ride and won't put me off going next year. Well organised and beautiful scenery. And Harvey was a very good boy :)

Is seems quite normal for there to be jumps near the start at sponsored rides - High Wycombe sponsored ride is the same they have jumps even nearer the start.

Those first jumps very tiny so not much of an ask for most horses as they could have trotted over them compared to the ones at High Wycombe which were quite big.

I did Waddesdon yesterday for the first time and we were really disappointed with the jumps. I know not everyone likes to jump but it's normally a good opportunity to have a range of jumps. These were all tiny and very spindly. And not to be able to blast all the way up the big hill was a real shame. At that point, we decided to take the short route. We won't be doing that one again.....

I also did it yesterday for the first time, thought it was a lovely ride. It was a shame so many people were having problems, we rode past a few fallers. The jumps weren't very challenging but i think that suited the majority :)

If you want bigger jumps, RAF Halton or some of the other rides may suit better. But if you just like a pop over a log type jump and the chance to open up, you cant beat Waddesdon.

The ride turns off halfway up the final big hill because otherwise you would end up in the midst of the deer herd and then their front garden. Given how many people fall off without the added spice of a deer herd darting back and forth, I reckon that's a good thing!

West Wycombe has bigger jumps but the ground is not as nice. the great thing about Waddesdon is the ground is so good with most of it being grass tracks that you can really get some speed up quite safely.

I did not jump at all not because I don't jump but because my companions don't and I can jump at home in the school or at show but rarely get the chance to go for the long canters. If I go again I will probably make a bit more effort to jump though I did not want to hold up my friends.

Most people seemed to enjoy it and there were less "racers" going round over taking everyone and out of control than I have seen at other rides. It seemed like a very polite ride.

Whilst i didnt go to Waddesdon to jump, i do agree with the above. IMO many of the jumps were so small (about 12" or 30cm) and made of a single piece of wood about half the thickness of a regular jump pole that they CAUSED the accidents- i tried a couple and my cob fell over them :o i hunt and like to jump but thats not my sole reason to go on a fun ride, yes i did Halton and yes the jumps are much bigger BUT the important thing is they are solid so horses back off them and jump properly. If Waddesdon made the jumps say 18" or even 2' and solid then the majority could jump them safely.. its a shame they dont have the odd bigger one like the couple in the woods at the end so those who want to pop something more challenging, can :)

The avenue of trees :)
