Ok thanks.my mum has a westie cross Yorkshire terrier, who has on and off colitis, and nothing seems to suit for long.any ideas other than raw would be much appreciated.whatever new dog food she try's is ok for a while and then the symptoms reappear.so far tried, fish 4dogs,James well beloved, science plan, royal canine sensitivity.
Naturediet is handy to keep as backup but Skinners field & trial duck & rice is often effective.
Have you tried tinned chappie? If the dog is not gluten intolerant it often suits.
He is allergic to almost everything.he is a rescue dog that she has had for three years, and this came on about three months after having him,the vet feels it was the stress of being in the rescue centre,he is a very sweet dog,but his bowels do cause him lots of problems he is only six.her other rescue dog can eat anything.
IBS or the canine equivalent is not caused by "the stress of being in the rescue centre"
It may be an allergy, an intolerance or a infestation. Has he checked a faecal sample for Guardia?
You need to eliminate any parasites and then start on exclusion diets - one protein at a time. Many Westies are allergic to chicken and often chicken is listed well down or hidden in the ingredients. I usually start with lamb & potato as this is easy & cheap (& quick to cook)
He did have Gardia and a worm infestation both of these are now clear.I think the vets feeling was that he had got so low when he arrived at the centre, that the stress of everything plus worms and Gardia have contributed to his bowel problems.
Have faecal samples confirmed the giardia is now cleared or has the dog just been given a course of treatment? Giardia can be very hard to shift, I dont find the standard treatment of 3 days panacur to be very effective and regularly have to re-treat the rescues at work before it clears up.
I agree with the tinned chappie suggestion, it seems to suit a lot of run down dogs despite not being the best food in the world, I would recommend the white fish version over the chicken though.
