I can't believe then day finally arrived that I could ride my lovely new horse (well fairly new lol) Specialist had said 3 months after my ankle replacement. I saw him on Thursday and he gave me the ok to ride.

So last night I rode :) He hadn't been rode for about a month so one of the girls got on first (just in case) He was a saint to mount and walked and trotted around the arena like an old hat (he is only 6). Then I got on, he was such a darling.
Yes he had forgotten all about balance and fell in and out, napped ever so slightly through his shoulder to the gate but nothing other than baby stuff.
INCREDIBLE my ankle was fantastic!!!!!!!not even a twinge!!!! :D It hurts far less to ride than it does to walk lol (which has always been the same) oh and I hadn't lost too much balance either:D

However I am so excited now about the future. Will just continue to take things slowly for both of us

Congratulations!!

Glad to hear the ankle doesn't hurt. I too have a 5-6 Month+ wait unit I can get the ok to ride again, I was just daydreaming about the day when I saw your thread!

I'm very excited for you, good luck getting back into the swing (balance!) of things.

YAY! Well done you.

I am broken and can't ride until Christmas! I am counting down the days, minutes and seconds!

Oh no what you done Asterid?

I go back into hospital for epidurals on Thursday :rolleyes: I was hoping to jump on Ollie before I got the new pain relief but I'm now full of cold and feel like crap so not sure if it will happen or not :(

Brilliant news!! I am week 9 of healing a broken ankle and I so can't wait to ride. Sounds good that it hurts less in the saddle than walking. Hopefully mine will be the case. Do you have normal stirrups or the bendy ones?

I think I will have problems down the line as I damaged the joint surface of the tibia. Did you have fusion or the ankle replacement operation?

I have flexi stirrups.
I had ankle replacement, was very lucky they don't normally do it for people under 60 or when your so active. They did mine because I also have rheumatoid arthritis so there is a high risk of arthritis in the foot if they did a fusion
make sure you have proper support for your soles!! I really can't tell you how important this is and make sure you don't walk with your toes out. Ankle alignment is EVERYTHING!! as is building the tendons, muscles etc strong enough to hold it all together

Thanks Soulfull for the top advice.

I have a pair of sprengers now so they will work for me.

When you say supportive soles do you mean sturdy solid soles to boots/shoes? Or supportive around the ankles?

I'm struggling to get walking again now cast off as the ligaments and tendons are all constricted and its taking some time to get them all wakened up again! Any tips on getting it all working again? Seems like you have healed pretty well and fast after the ankle replacement!

I'm 40 so I hope my ankle lasts long enough that they will consider me for replacement when the time comes.

Enjoy your riding and its great you doing so well it gives me hope for when I start again!

excellent news! :)

sounds like a very major op you had.

I am hoping to have my first ride after my op next weekend, will have been 10 weeks without riding.

I mean good strong boots like mountain horse, AND most importantly insoles with arch support otherwise it may all collapse.
As for getting it all back yo need to be religious with exercising even when it it hurts and feels like it won't stretch, it will eventually. I found that I would heal one part then another part would hurt, this is normal and keep going. Obviously if you REALLY tweak it you need to rest and ice it, then go again

I have also suffered prolasped discs in my back as a result of uneven gait so having to have phsyio on that too and the exercises are taking ages. worth it though if I can get stronger.

A good tip...is to use both of your crutches and try and walk as normally as possible, also if any of the exercises, like the one where you go up on your tip toes and slowly come down, is too hard use the crutches to lean on to start with. This one alone has taken 8 wks to do with a lot of pain and it seemed I was always doing it wrong ie using my knees! However i am getting there now
Look on google for exercises for Achilles tendon they are ideal

If I can help anymore pm me

Fabby If your like me it won't be as hard as you think when you get back in the saddle. I have a fairly big moving horse and thought I would have to relearn how to ride his trot but I didn't :D

Thanks Soulfull I can't thank you enough for the tips and exercises.

Your right about the pain moving to somewhere new everyday! Its seems one step forward, two back at the moment. :(

Any excuse to go out shopping for new boots to ride in!

Thanks again and will PM you if I think of anything else that worries me. Much appreciate your help. :D

Happy riding!

Im broken as well at the moment -surgeon has said 3mnths till i can ride. I had ligament reconstruction with bone graft!

Before I used to ride in the sprenger flexi stirrups and use ariats top range ankle boots as they have inbuilt support!

So excited to hear that you are back riding again- cant wait to be allowed to ride!!

you need the boots to walk in to start with too. I still only walk in good strong boots with arch supporting insoles, which I bought separately
