Vet is coming between and 1 and 3 to see pony, who is 22 and has bad arthritis in her hocks. She suddenly went badly lame on Boxing day and no amount of tests/box rest/bute, etc are making any difference. I think today will be the "big decision" day... I've had her since she was a yearling and it will be such a hard decision to have her PTS. I know it's for the best but she'll be the first horse I've had to have this happen to and I am dreading it... The most positive outcome I can hope for is apparently a steroid injection to fix her for the summer, but once the cold weather sets in again that will be it. It's such a wierd thing knowing that you will be responsible for the date and manner of their death. Suppose that's part of the deal though isn't it?

So sorry to hear this but at least you know you've ALWAYS done your best for her & you just have to steel yourself to carry on doing what's right FOR HER now. I had similar with my old boy (he'd made it to 29/30) but came in one day walking crab-like behind and could even stand still to eat - he walked round his bucket as he ate and stopped half-way which, as he was such a glutton he'd NEVER done, even when he had breathing problems years before he still kept eating so I knew this was the right time. Be strong and <<hugs>> to you.

I do feel for you. It is a hard decision but one which you are doing in the best interest of your horse. It is lucky to have spent the 21 years with you and leave this world with you.
Be strong at the time, either today or at the end of summer and then allow yourself to grieve.
You have done your best for her, and will be doing so.
Best wishes

I am sorry to hear this, what a difficult and hard thing to do. Hopefully your vet can recommend a steroid injection so she can enjoy a last summer.
You are doing the right thing to at least be considereing doing this (pts), and I respect everybody who can let their friend go when it is best for them, not hang on because the owner can't bear it.
Please let us know the decision made. Hugs to you.

If you go with the steroid injections have you considered a joint supplement to help with the arthritis.Mine went lame on 2/1/08 with arthritis in his hocks and he is only 6.I hope it all goes well with the vet be thinking of you .

We had to do this last year for our old girl, who had been with us for 23 years. Last summer was wierd as I knew that it was her last. I spent many a midnight sitting with her in the field (she had always enjoyed that) and she was pts at home in November, flirting with the knackerman (she had always been a tart) She enjoyed her last summer, as she didn't know, it is hard but you know you are still doing the best for her, as you have always done.
