and it's a horrid wait. Millie is a twelve year old greyhound with horrific teeth, so they are coming out as even with brushing and mouth washing, they are still stinky and we think it's causing recurrent problems with other infections.

Anyway, do you think she'll be okay under anaesthetic at her age and if so has anyone ever had a toothless hound? How did they/do they cope?

Thanks

where i work we do dentals on lots of older dogs and cats, they all cope fine with no teeth if they are removed-if they are that bad she made need a course of antibiotics before the dental is done and possibly a pr-op blood test at her age too to make sure there is nothing going on that will make her a higher risk

My giant schnauzer had an anaesthetic at the age of 13 for a GDV. She was very very poorly when she went in but came through it fine. I have no experience of toothless dogs, but I am always amazed at how animals seem to cope with these sorts of things. Hope all goes well - its horrid waiting.

Thank you everyone. She is fine, if a little sore and dazed but slowly returning to normal. It's so emotional having dogs sometimes. She still has a few teeth remaining so hopefully she'll still be able to enjoy the odd pigs ear!

My oldest greyhound has no teeth left other than her 4 canines - she is only 9 years old! I was really worried when the vets took the final ones out, but she copes absolutely fine :) To be honest it is the best thing which could have been done for her, her teeth were truly awful whatever I did with them. I feed her either 'soft' raw (minced tripe, minced whole chicken etc) or Skinners Duck and Rice - I assume she swallows it whole, but she eats just as fast as she used to :)

The sweetest thing is she still likes to chew bones and sticks :D

My greyhound dog had 14 teeth taken out last year just before he came to me, so has most of the teeth on one side of his mouth missing (he is 5 ) and he doesnt seem to cope quite as well, but he still manages a full raw diet including bones - he just doesnt eat very quickly :p
