my old lad has gone all weak and wobbly in his hindquarters. This happened before 2 years ago and he did recover although not totally. Is older now and seems worse and has been having trouble getting up. Dont know what Im going to do without him.

My adopted pony of 44 did this earlier in the summer. I've never seen anything like it but I don't think she was in any pain despite having to walk like a crab. I suspect she had twisted herself trying to get away from a new horse which was nasty to her. She did slowly get a bit better, but also had relapses. Her owner then decided to have her put down anyway. Ironically, on the day she was better than she had been for 4 weeks but as I would have had her put down on the first day if she'd been mine, I don't think it was the wrong decision. I do miss her, even though she wasn't mine. I'm sorry for you but I think you already know what will be the best for your lovely old boy. Good luck with making that decision.

It might be that he has arthritis in his neck which is compressing on his spinal cord hence the ataxia (limb incoordination). Or he might be crabbing sideways because he is colicky, my friends horse looked to be walking very strangely when he had an attack. Either way see what your vet thinks. It might just be a little setback rather than the end of the world so try not to worry too much till the vet comes out xx

Phew, vet been, not time yet, but says that could happen suddenly if he is not able to get up. Have had to retire him from riding though. Dont care about that as long as I can keep him a bit longer

A horse on the yard had a similar sounding attack a few months ago and the vet couldn't seem to diagnose the cause but he did recover after about 4 days although it certainly didn't look too positive when the vet was called so I have all fingers crossed that things worked out for you with the vet. Good luck.
