An earlier post got me thinking and i've just been looking at dressage events at a local centre.
They've got one coming up that has DUK Walk and Trot 1.
Does anyone know what this will entail? And yes I know it will be in walk and trot before anyone points it out - I'm not that blonde!!!!
Even at local level what bits are allowed?

A snaffle or a hanging cheek. Jointed or french link, loose ring or eggbutt type.

Just 20 meter circles, change of rein in working trot, change rein free walk long rein etc. Go for it

Have a look at this website, it will give you some good simple tips once you have estabished which bit you are going to practice in, grab yoruself a copy of the test and practice at home, I'm sure you will get on fine with one of the bits mentioned, as your are only walking and troting, if you work your horse in well before hand, it will also help take any edge off.

Double check on the rules for the class - alot of our local centre's run the W+T as a Have a Go class and any normal riding bit is allowed - if it doesn't say that you'll have to swap - maybe a hanging cheek french link would give you a bit more control

Great way to get started without the worry of a canter - have done this twice now on Stinky. Did it on Cairo as he got older as he liked to think he was out and about still. Again started Jemima on these until she won, then moved on.

You have to use the same bit as you would in any other test. Judge often more forgiving if you talk as they understand that you are often on a baby just starting out.

I am now finding a barrel mouthed hanging cheek to be the bit for Chancer when schooling - he is really really light in it and it helps me to get him to round more when I ask.

Good luck, go for it and have fun.

Lets hope Hovis hasn't taken any advice from a horse my OH used to ride.

We were both so excited at going to Hickstead to compete at their unaff prelim dressage. OH's horse, Sid was very forward going & during the canter he went down the long side and promptly out the entrance of the school. We were in stitches but he turned him round and cantered back into the school to complete the test. Shame he only got a 3 for that bit, 6's & 7's for the rest.
