Where did you/would you start teaching it?

Got a nice active walk from behind, good powerful and collected canter but only ever asked through trot as a progressive. Started to ask on the lunge last night and trot strides were becoming less. Is this the way forward, lessening the trot strides or would you make the direct transition more clear?

Thanks

I didn't start asking for it until I had both the strong walk and the collected canter, as you have. In my case, my RI got us really collected doing some canter figure-8's with a few strides of trot in between, then put us on a circle doing some trot / canter / trot / walk transitions, and then got me to ask for the walk - canter transition on the circle. All I needed to do at that point was half-halt with my outside hand and slide my outside leg back behind the girth and my boy just bounced into it. Some praise, a pat, back to walk through trot and then ask again.

Good luck. It's a great feeling when they bound into it - really powerful.

Just remember to keep them short!

i do it now lol - shes 5 - she gets walk to canter easier than trot/canter for someunknown reason.

(or i do? :D )

i get a really active walk.... lsitening to me then ask.
