I am about to take the plunge and enter my 5 year old in some walk and trot tests. Trouble is I have never donw anything like this before. What do I wear? Should he be plaited? Any suggestions greatfully received

I did some with my youngster last year and will be with my new youngster this year, I always plat and wear long boots, smart jacket shirt and cream/white jods.

good luck with them..

What is he?

To be honest you can be reasonably laid back in walk trot tests. Below is dress code in order of preference;

You
Navy jacket, hacking jacket or black showing jacket
Navy velvet hat, skull cap with navy velvet cover or smart black or navy cover
Gloves - any smart, but not white unless your hands are perfect!
Hair - tied back in a bun and hairnet
No make-up or jewellery
Shirt & stock (navy or black jacket) or shirt & tie with hacking jacket
White joddys or light cream - at this level other yellows or creams are acceptable
Long leather boots, smart short boots with gaiters or plastic long boots (black)

tack - check rules, as can vary

Horse turnout - bathed would be nice but if not then well groomed, and mane and tail turned out according to breed.

Walk trot tests are brilliant for getting you out and about, so have fun! x

Hes a 14.2 coloured cob x. I have just started having lessons on him and am so pleased with his progress that I thought I'd give it a go. Thanks for the advice

So he could either be left traditional, with full mane and feathers, or hogged and trimmed to be a show cob type depending on what would suit best. Well done, you get out of plaiting either way!!!! x
