Walking on a busy road, and a dog fight

Just one thing to point out here guys. It might seem very obvious to you about keeping 2 fighting bitches apart but clearly OP didn't know hence asking..and being hard on her isn't really helpful. It would make me think twice about asking for help in here.

Not just the fighting bitches, but surely if another dog attacked yours and nearly killed it you wouldn't want them to be together again? I had a dog at a yard I was on attack my dog, even though they normally got on well I certainly didn't trust him any more and kept them apart after that.

In addition to sensible advice already given, I see that there was a dead rabbit around at the time of both fights. Dead rabbits have caused huge ill feeling here amongst my own dogs, and some lively scraps, probably due to over zealous guarding of the trophy.

We've had to permanently separate two bitches. The second fight came more than a year after the first. We'd taken in my mother's bitch, and when things went well it was great. When it went badly, it was horrendous, so she went on to be successfully rehomed.

I actually think that both are being equally as irresponsible. No dog can be trusted 100% off lead and even one who has had the best recall for years could become distracted and run out onto a road. There is a guy near me who always has his dog off lead next to roads. I have reported him, but nothing has been done about it. The dog doesn't always listen to him and is often trailing quite a distance behind the guy. One night he went back into his house before the dog had even crossed a street. About a minute later a woman came out of the house to get the dog. So I think it's sheet idiocy for someone to think their dog will be fine off lead next to a road. The OP is definitely in the wrong for taking her dog back to a place where the dog has been involved in a fight with the property owner's dog. If it were me I would be making other arrangements for the dog.

A couple of things come to mind.... firstly, is it truly illegal to walk a dog off the lead on a public highway??

And.... if your dog caused a serious accident at the livery yard is there insurance cover in such an instance????? Our insurers, NFU, have made it very clear that the only dogs to be on our yard, loose, are our own...... consequently none of our liveries can allow their dogs to run amock.

road traffic act 1988 i have been fined £80 in the past for this as i was not aware of it.
