Is it better doing it with a bridle?

Hello!

After 7 months box rest, Murph was ACPed and lead in his normal bridle. Same after the 5 months box rest a few years later. Actually, i dont think he needed the ACP the second time. Just carry loads of treats in your pocket to distract her when she thinks about running!!

Have fun!

My usually very VERY laid back horse ended up having to be led in a bridle after box rest. Mind you, she is a big girl - if she weren't so hefty she may have been ok, but I didn't want to risk getting trampled by a thug of an ID!
I had her normal bridle, a lunge line attached to a Newmarket chain, and gloves and steel toe caps on me! Better safe than sorry IMO, and people tend to give you a wide berth if you're all togged out so if you have to go along the road you should be ok

Honestly though, as the others have said, it depends on the horse and a lot of other factors. Don't worry about it yet. You'll be fine and so will Grace.

After a week I was fine with just headcollar and lead rope. With a dizzy mare.

Though she is one who, bless her, on another occasion when I let the pony free when turning out and pony thundered off bucking, she went to run after, then stopped dead as I didn't let her go, and she was on a headcollar. Sweetie.

Yeh work with thoroughbreds do get many on box rest, acp ,chiff if you think it is needed ,we dont use lounge lines in case the horse bolts you let go and it all gets wrapped up around its legs,i certainly would not attach one to a chif because if this happened you would end up with a horse with a broken jaw. Long rope that you can slip if you need to and start off in a confined area to begin with just in case, hat and gloves if ness.Your horse may not need all this if its laid back c how it goes good luck

Hiya,
My boy had about 16 weeks box rest following a fractured Radius, he is usually laid back but we ended up with a chifney and sedalin as he was up and down and bouncing all over. Problem was he got to know that when I arrived it was walkies and got so excited that the sedalin stopped workin. Great for the first few days though. Freinds horse was in for months and he walked out perfectly, no problems at all. She just used her bridle.
Hope it goes well for you and good luck.

My totally laid back mare was on complete box rest last October after a nasty leg injury and in January vet said I had to start gradually walking her out for five minutes a day building up by five minutes each week. Me being a complete novice walked her out in a head collar first day and she was fine, second day she was rearing up like a nutter so walked her out in bridle and ACPed her which was totally disheartening after all the drugs etc she had already had but it worked out fine.

I gradually cut down the amount of ACP but had set backs when walking her anywhere near her field or anywhere near grass as she got too excited and just wanted to get out there. Towards the end I was just walking her in hand with her bridle on and no ACP for about an hour a day just round the yard which was totally boring but it was worth it cos she has now totally recovered.

Hope it all goes well for you x

ACP's, a bridel and a lunge line (although you prob wont need the ACP's the first time - its once they kow whats going on the fun starts!)
As someone else said - treats/polos work well for keeping attention on you - as does basic parelli training.

She has done lots of natural horsemanship training with her previous owner, and I have done a lot of Richard Maxwell's techniques with her in the 12 months I have owned her. She is incredibly respectful of the pressure halter so originally I had hoped to just use this but it all depends on her temperment in 4 weeks time.

I just wanted to see what others did in the same situation as this is my first horse I have had on this period of box rest

Hi, I've just started walking mine out on Thursday, 10 mins a day, I use a chifney with a short rope over the top of his normal headcollar, has worked a treat. Its not because he's excited ( wish he was have to practically drag him around ) its because he just wants to get his head down and eat every single blade of grass.

I would give a global herb super calm sachet about an hour before walking out.

I use it on anything that just needs to have the edge taken taken off. It doesent drug the horse but nicely relaxes it.

It's herbal and is generally always effective (costs approx £2.50 a sachet).

I know other people who use it for many different purposes.

That was the other thing I meant to say in my first reply - I only sedated my horse once, and that was the first time turning out properly after five and a half months' box rest. ACP paste didn't work, she ran around like a loony until I could catch her! I gave her So Kalm paste and the combination of the ACP and So Kalm meant that the second time I turned her out she was very chilled. I never had to sedate her for walking though, as the bridle seemed to do the trick.
