Walking out in hand after 8 weeks box rest and surgery?

Friday is the day! We can start doing 15mins of walking out am and pm.

Am just after some advice on the best way to do it really. I'll ask vet for some acp/sedalin. How have you all gone about it?

I'm just so worried about her going stupid and really hurting her leg it'll be nowhere near healed yet, so I desperately want it to go smoothly.

Wear a hat & gloves

Put bridle on horse

Lunge rope

Don't walk anywhere near a road, in case horse gets away from you..

Watch out for lashing out (front & rear legs) in all the excitement!

I'm not really worried about me, it's more her hurting herself I'm worried about! lol

From past experience of my old horse, its not them you need to worry about - its you! No matter what, most horses that have been couped up in the box will tend to have an explosive moment when they are first taken out.....I split my head open last time, so make sure you wear your hat!!!!

PMSL at the thought of it now, it was years ago! Not funny at the time, horse reared up & caught me on the top of my noggin!!

She's never reared, yet????

I'd be alright if I was allowed on top!!! Always feel safer up there!

Ditto the others! Close all gates. Carry a schooling whip (so's you can give yourself a body zone!).

That sedalin is fantastic stuff!! I drugged my boy every time I took him out for his daily walk. He had 8 weeks box rest as well. Just hope its not a windy day for you!!

Hat, gloves, bridle and reins. Never use a lunge line. The closer the horse is to you, the safer you are.

And quite often it's easier than you think it's going to be.

Choose a quiet time of day, stay within the confines of the yard - and just get on with it. Have a plan and stick to it.

Don't go in to a field and just be aware of your surroundings.

It'll be fine.

Hi, I've been there with my girl. The sedalin didn't really work. We eventually reached a compromise as she's a greedy stick that we would walk, graze, walk graze. She did have the occasional all four legs off the floor moments though. My biggest problem was if we encountered another horse as she would go balistic.

When I could I got someone to bring the yard nanny pony along with me. She was much better with her. I tried walking her in the menage but she just threw herself on the floor to roll and then went bonkers when she jumped up.

We are now in the 3rd week of a months field rest and I start riding her out in walk next weekend.

Which leg/s did you have done. Daisy had her two hinds. The op wounds were fine although she'll never show again as you can see the thickning up the back of her leg and she has scars where the stomped the bandages down her hock in the horspital.

PS I always lead her out in a Richard Maxwell Halter and 12ft line. Much more control.
