Well back in the day when we had roads and tracks trotting spped was calculated at 220metres per minute. Then they decided that phase C should be a mix of walk and trot and the time was calculated at 150 metres per minute. So I would hazard a guess around 100 mpm, but can't be sure as I can't remember the exact proportions the of walk and trot the FEI deicided we should all be doing! 220 mpm is a pretty gentle trot. If a horse was walking at 100 mpm it would cover 6km in an hour which is just under 4 miles which doesn't sound very much to me.... Confused now, maybe that 150 mpm included the compulsory 5 minute halt about a third of the way into phase C
I've got a 15.1 cob who I must admit doesn't like to walk on much.
However, I've been timing her recently as I'd like to do some low level endurance with her. If I "fizz her up" out hacking by constantly asking her to trot and come back to walk so she's almost jogging at the slightest touch of my legs and mix a bit of trot work in, we can cover a 5 mile hack in just under an hour which obviously means we're going at 5mph (just over).
Endurance requires you to maintain a speed of 5mph to be awarded points for the ride. They do state that it's expected you'll be doing the ride at a slow trot with bursts of canter and short walks to regain breath. So, by my powers of deduction (not good powers I might add) I wouldn't think just walking would be over 4mph on a forward going horse at the most

That is the minimum speed! Most endurance horses trot and canter the majority of the ride, and then walk the last part to get the heart rate down for the vetting. The hardest thing to do when you are starting out in endurance on a fairly forward going horse is to stay within the speeds for the novice classes - some people get eliminated because they have gone too fast, which is gutting!
Oh yes, that's the minimum speed. I realise that. I didn't know there was a maximum average speed though! Not that it will be of any concern to me and Patches. We're not likely to break any speed limits.
I know I can go faster with Patches off road. At home, I don't ride in our fields as they are rutted from where the dairy herd graze over summer and the back end before lining up time (autumn). So I've been making sure we can meet the 5mph at the moment just on the the roads. Obviously I won't canter on the roads so I'm stuck with bursts of trot and a forward going, near joggy walk. I don't like to do too much trotting on the roads, and I won't trot downhill. Most of our hacking involes some steep-ish hill work which I happily trot up but walk down.
Sport Endurance's first ride is at Kelsall, I'm assuming Delamere Forest, on 11th February. All off road. I'm pretty sure we'll find it far easier to be well over the minimum speed limit there.
