Just planning ahead . . . . .

The whole family is going to Gotherington for Christmas so the dogs will need copious walking to be good citizens while staying with the in-laws.:D Can anyone recommend good off lead walks in the area suitable for fairly high energy dogs and preferably stock-free? (They're not bad with cows but sheep+lurchers+family Christmas sounds like a recipe for disaster to me.)

Have a look at the Ordnance Survey map for the area. Gotherington is rich in Rights of Way and your dogs will love it (Keep an eye out for horses, there's a local Riding School) and Cleeve Hill isn't far away either. Or Cheltenham Racecourse........

There are loads of footpaths around there :) You can go up Prescott Hill (where they have the hill climb), Dixon Hill, there are footpaths from Gotherington to Gretton and Winchcome. If they don't mind car travel then you can pop them in teh car and take them to Cleeve Hill, Dumbleton Hill (or park in Alderton and walk up the otherside of Dumbleton Hill called Alderton Hill), park in Beckford/Conderton/Overbury/Westmancote and walk up Bredon Hill.... PM me if you want more info :D

Excellent idea, thanks! We've done Cleeve Hill (bit of a sheep issue) and whatever the park is near The Balloon pub on past visits so just looking to expand our options. Can you actually walk on the racecourse (legally)?? That would actually be really convenient as only a short drive away. I'd love to find where the "natives" go as the young dog, particularly, loves a good play and the more knackered they can be the better!

I live in Charlton Abbotts, which is a tiny hamlet of 6 houses set in 4,500 acres of setaside and woodland, and am more than happy to show you some of the best walks/rides around us! We're just on the other side of Cleeve hills, so not too far from you, and no sheep!

Well, there is a footpath that runs around the perimeter, but I am sure that people also walk dogs around the car parking areas near Southam. They probably don't actually go on the hallowed turf!

Prescott Hill is a good idea. A walk up there to the Golf Club at Cleeve should wear your dogs out - not to mention you!!

A popular place with dog walkers is the Roman Road. This goes from Granna Lane in Gotherington upto the top of Bushcombe Lane. Goes through woods and arable land - no stock. Most folks park at the top, there is plenty of parking at the top of Bushcombe which is opposite the turning for Cleeve Hill golf club.

There are many footpaths and bridleways in this area, you are spoiled for choice.

That is very kind of you! I would never ask anyone to play tour guide during the festive season but if you're looking for a reason to escape the house ;) I might very well take you up on the offer! :)

My parents live just down the road from you :D
