Blaze's microchip has been on the move for a while, he is now 14 months old and the chip is now at the base of his right ear , been to the vets tonight for his booster and even the vet was surprised at how far it had moved, it worries me that it is in his collar area and also being a collie is very lively , where the heck is it going to go next, as it is so easy to feel i would prefer to have it removed and get him tattooed instead .
Anyone else had problems with chips ?

I think your right either place new chip or tattoo as someone might miss it when scanning if their not thorough. We've had a few migrate not sure if it's an error in technique or just one of those things. Xxx

My dogs chip has moved down to her shoulder n is visible ( she's a whippet so v short haired)
You could get ya dog tattoo regardless n have both ,,some dog owners do this
Or could u re chip same details as long it's put down on data

whats the worry about it needing removed/ it's not going to cause any problems. might want to place a new one for security or get him tatto'd as well. also if you're in england chipping is about to become compulsory so no point removing!

Just below the ear is the implant site of choice in some Scandinavian countries.
As a guess your dogs chip was inserted by a vet? Manyvets put the chip in as if giving an injection rather than implanting in the correct place.

No need to have the chip removed but add a note to Petlog, or whichever database, of the chip's position.

Oh so i could be ok where it is then , was'nt done by a vet but by a border collie breeder who is local to me , registered microchipper , not causing any problems at present , my only concern would be his collar , good point about chipping in the uk becoming law though,

no point informing the database as they dont ever scan the dog, i would have it removed (if just under the skin) and a new one inserted as many many places only run the scanner over the shoulder blades and in its current position your one would not register.

not sure if microchipping is going to become compulsory as it will be expensive for the government unless the cost of doing it goes sky high, it has just been proposed

Microchipping is set to become compulsory in 2016.
Most of us scan the whole dog when looking for a chip.

we scan the whole dog at work too, as everyone should but it is not always done.

its been proposed but not passed is my understanding after a conversation with a vet at work tonight but i stand to be corrected on that

It's compulsory to have a chip or tattoo to compete in my organisation and it has been compulsory for all dogs to have a chip since last Spring where I live.
I've scanned tonnes of dogs and have found them here, there and everywhere. I've also scanned an ex-service dog that was brought in from the Netherlands and had, er, quite a few chips :o
My own old dog had his up around his right ear and a friend's dog's is in the chest. It wouldn't bother me as long as I had a rough idea where it was. At events I have scanned at the owners would probably know if they were in odd places and I got to know certain dogs by sight and know where to find their chip :p

i agree with all of that CC it is just we have dogs bought in to us that have been homed from 'rescue' centers and occasionally when we scan them we find a chip that has been missed, when they have been missed they are usually in unusual locations

That's why whoever is scanning should be well-briefed, and why there should always be a back-up scanner!

yes in an ideal world but its still not happening, OP my pointis that to give yourself the greatest chance of getting your dog back via his/her microchip in the event that you ever loose him i would have a microchip place between the shoulder blades where it is most likely to be detected by any one however capable/incapable they are at wielding a scanner.

as this is just going round in circles i am done here:)

There's no need to have the 1st one removed unless causing problems. We've got a few patients with two chips. Some we've checked at boosters and found to be faulty. We can the whole dog but not everyone is that thorough. Xxx we had a client with a cat for Id chipping and found the cat had two already!!!!! Xxx
