Want to do something special with a shoe...

My friend has had to have her horse put down recently, and has kept the last set of shoes he has had on. She is keeping hold of 3 to turn somehow into photo frames, and i have asked to have one to do something with for her.

Have got some oak, and (with the brothers help) hoping to somehow put a shoe on a square of that, with a plaque in the middle with the horses name on.

Has anyone else done anything nice with horse shoes once they have lost their horse? what did you do?

Also how will i clean the shoes, and prevent them from rusting?

How could i attach it to the oak?

do you think car spray paint would work if i get silver coloured one? or would it need to be some sort of precial paint? will have a look on ebay, thanks!
 
If you dont paint it and it lives in a moist environment it will rust. I would ask your farrier to clean the shoe up in his/her forge if this was not already done. Then if you soak it overnight in vinegar and rub it with steel wool it will turn silver. You will have have to put some elbow grease into it though.

I would suggest painting it with hammerright as that is a metal paint and will last for years.

Take the oak, sand it and varnish it, get some counter sunk screws, place the shoe where you want it on the wood and with a manual or electri screw driver sink the screws through the middle nail holes with the ground surface facing upwards. This is only if you want it attached to the wood.

To mount it like its a trophy i would suggest paying someone to do it for you possibly a carpenter as this is much harder to do.
 
It's not quite the same.... but we used horse shoes as part of the church decorations at our wedding.

we scrubbed them with wire wool, and then sprayed them with a silver car touch up paint. we then threaded various ribbons through the nail holes.

We were also given a decorated horse shoe - sprayed silver, and wrapped in a pale pink ribbon, then with little beads and silk flowers attached. It's really pretty.
 
Thanks for the ideas...my brother is a cabinet maker/carpenter, so he shouldn't stuggle! Was wondering how i was going to attach it to the wood, screws will work!

Also what should i do about the toe clips? cut them off? or bang them into the wood? or could maybe leave the shoe raised off the surface?
 
Do you know anyone who works in a car factory as they usually have a chroming department? We were lucky and had a friend that worked at Rolls Royce, say no more! Keep meaning to put one as a door knocker but never get around to it.
 
I personally like the idea of having it chromed, that would look amazing especially mounted with a nice silver plate with name etc on. would be really classy too
 
ok....so how would you go about getting something chromed if u dont know someone who works for rolls royce?! or they are only 15mins away, shall i just rock up and ask if they will chrome my horse shoe!

They were under coated then painted with gloss, i think?
A friend on another forum did them for me, well her grandad did!
