A looong way!

He was an absolute GIT to get out of the yard, I'm so disappointed with him and had to have quite a battle. Eventually I won and we were on our way! But, the point is I did it mounted, I've not won a battle to get him out of the yard, while I was actually on board. I'm sure I'll get there one day. This time last year I couldn't have imagined riding him out, let alone cantering!

Anyway, we did some faster cantering today :D I'm impressed with his breaks! I really am! He sometimes feels like he might be trying to be strong, but when I ask for him to ease up, he does with no issue :)

We had a bit of trouble with the builders today, he could see something that wasn't there yesterday and didn't like it. He span (away from home, silly pony!) and didn't want to go. I pulled into a driveway and let the cars past, I thanked them profusely for waiting for idiot horse to stop being silly! I got him going again swiftly and we had no further issue!

I decided we should have another challenge - GATES!

Well, again, I am impressed! He did them very nicely :D

Just over 7 miles today!!

Thanks :D I'm so pleased I can finally have (almost) proper hacks on my favourite horse :D

Haha, I just realised, if you look at it a certain way, it looks like a horse!!

That's great!:p
Looks like you have lovely hacking, we don't have many places to gallop as most of the land on the moss is private so we have to go a good 5 miles or so to get a decent 2 1/2 mile field to gallop on, it is lovely though.

Luckily for me my TB is brilliant in traffic but has a lack of brakes when it comes to even a fast canter, nevermind a gallop

Your tenacity is admirable so very well done! I'm pleased to read you're finally getting the little sod to work under your rules now :) (PS you sound like such a nice girl; always upbeat about things; a great quality to have :) )

Well done, that's great progress. Nappers can be like that and it's hard to know why they and fine sme days and not the next, the main thing is if he naps you win, and while he may always try it on, he won't try it on for long eventually. Well done for persevering!

I actually read this before I went to work, it had me smiling all day :D Thank you so much!! I actually blushed!

FfionWinnie - It was terrifying! But I didn't want to let the bugger win! I knew if I gave in, I'd be back to square one. He was so so good the rest of the ride though! Hopefully he'll learn to like going out, I'm sure he has fun once we're out, but there's just something he's always hated about that gate.

Ebony - Thank you :D He looks like an Angel, but he's really a Devil!! Naw, I kid, he tries his little heart out, bless him :)

Well done you!

I'm quite interested in this, I am about to move my horse to my new yard, he hasn't left his current yard in over 10 years - never hacked, and I would love to try hacking him out. He can be a bit of an idiot, but am determined to hack him.

How long has the whole thing taken you? How did you go about doing it? Unfortunately to get anywhere from my yard he will have to cross a road, though it's a quiet one.

Sorry for hijacking your thread with questions haha!

Firstly, good luck with the move! I hope it all goes smoothly :)
Hacking is amazing! I wouldn't be without it :D

Well, Ned has been at the yard for nearly 6 years, but we didn't get alone for the first year or so. Technically, it's not taken me that long. However, the work leading up to it has taken quite a while. I spent a couple of years just getting used to him and when I found I knew him well enough, I started to push both of our boundaries. I started by getting him used to the school on his own, so he'd be doing something new, but in a nice, safe space.
Once we'd cracked the school, I started bombproofing in the school (tarp, flags, plastic bags etc).
I then decided to start taking him for walks in-hand. I couldn't believe it the first time I got him out!! I hadn't even managed to get him on the yard a month or so before and now he was out and about!!
I asked Mum to come with me, as Ned LOVES my Mum. When we'd walked out of the yard and up the lane, I hopped on. He was so good!
We gradually worked on that and he got really good, but I still wasn't doing it completely alone.
Then something happened. I still have no idea what. But he stopped going out all together and would throw an epic hissy fit when I asked. This was a few months ago now, but we worked and worked and worked and I could finally take him for in-hand walks again.

One day, after a particularly nasty thread on here (where I was accused of being bad for Ned and he'd kill me, haha) I thought "**** it, I'm going to do it to prove these people wrong" and I did! I walked him out, then hopped on board and we were off!! Just me and Ned. It was wonderful :)

I started to get YO to hold him while I got on, as he can be a pig to get on, but we're slowly slowly getting there :)

I have to walk along (sometimes cross too) a busy road and since we've always been very respectful of the road, that's carried on. Even if it's clear we stop and wait. YO says "The day you just let them wander across, is the day there will be an accident"

I hope that's helped and I hope to see some hacking reports from you :D :D
