Wanted: A Dummies guide to BS winnings - actual and notional

A friend's daughter has recently joined BS and is doing pretty well. So far has won, cash in hand, £75 in just a few outings. Friend thinks daughter will be out of novice fairly soon assuming she is placed again but wasn't sure when and what it all means. She's read the rules and couldn't fathom them out, and tbh, I've tried and it's all greek to me! I know naff all about BS and haven't the foggiest about actual and notional winnings. Please can someone explain how it all works using very simple language :p

PS If it makes any difference, we're talking ponies not horses!

It all depends what kind of classes she has been doing. For some opens if you win only £1 notional will go on your card. If you win a pony British Novice £12 notional will go on your card.
As the owner on the pony it is very simple for her to look up the pony's winnings online. They are updated by midday every Wednesday. A pony British Novice is eligible to JD ponies with winnings up to £99
 
Actual - is the actual winnings you take home in your pocket.
Notional - Depends on how many are in the class, So say there are only 5 people in the class, they'll reduce what appears on your record (theres some formula to it). Its to stop people being out of classes before they're ready. If there's only 2 people in a class for example, and you win it you'll not get full winnings on your record because its not a great win if you know what I mean, if you win a class of say 40 people then you will get the full amount on your card.

Does that make any sense or have I confused you more?!

With regards to DarkHorseB's comment about BSJA results going online once a week - I'd say this is very loosely done. I've waited months for results to be added to my record in the past!
 
BS set the rules so that no matter where you jump (big or small venue) you will get the same winnings for teh same placing in the same class. This is notional money. However, in order to attract competitiors, venues will offer higher winnings for placings in classes so this is the actual money you win. It wouldnt be fair if a venue miles from you offered big winnings and someone won a few times and rocketed through the grades whilst your local venue offered measly winnings so all gradings etc go by the notional money.

I think magic melon might be confused - its nothing to do with competitor numbers all that happens there is that there will only be a placing/money for every 5 starters so in a small class of say 10 they will only give prizes to first and second but the first place ( and all below them) will get the same money (notionally) whether there are 2 or 102 starters. I hope this makes sense......!!
 
Your best bet is to look at the ponies record online (its free for the owner) to see how much actual you have. Your only out of BN once you've won over £100 actual and you'll be surprised how much notional you have to win to achieve that. :)

No it is £100 NOTIONAL - actual winnings don't come into it at all for being out of classes.

MM I must have been lucky all my winnings so far have gone up the next Wednesday - maybe I have just competed at very efficient show centres as I suppose them submitting the results are the key!
