I'm looking for a new farrier and equine dentist (not the same person obviously! )

Old farrier has had to add VAT to his prices, making his shoes £90/set!!

Old dentist has broken his leg so can't work for a bit and I've got 2 with razor sharp molars. ...

Any recommendations?

Depends where is Shropshire. Farrier:- Uppington Smithy were always good, I use James Price but he only covers the NE as he lives in Gnosall. For dentists, I used to use Robin HArding but he is very very busy, now I use MArk Siddle, vet, (SVS) who has done the EDT training and is very good. He also doesn't charge as much as Robin (doesn't charge call out for pre-booked appointments).

Thanks for the reply.

I've had experience of Uppington -competent farriers but I can't be dealing with their lack of communication -I think it's very unprofessional to take over a week to return phone calls.

I ve never been sure about vets doing teeth -I've always felt it's an adjunct to their main job, as opposed to the full time dentists ....worth investigating further though.

We're just outside Shrewsbury btw

Mark Sanderson at Severn Edge is doing his EDT training (think he's more or less finished) and Nick Graham at the same practice is also interested in teeth. Have zone days as well up to Shrewsbury, think Monday or Tuesday but can't quite remember.

Am biased as OH is Nick...

Interesting - that's why I stopped using Uppington many years ago, after a long time being happy with them. I thought they must have cracked it by now!
I share your concerns about vets doing teeth but Mark is good - he charged me £35 per horse, Robin used to charge £40, I think it went up to £45 and he is inclined to use power tools. Not a problem for mine but could be for some.

I use Uppington Smithy, never have any probs getting hold of farrier (I use Simon, no complaints here re. quality of service/ shoeing). He's great at coming at short notice if he's in the area, is flexible about appointments, and he turns up on time. In fact he's usually early. I used to use Jonathan Nunn when I was over Weston Park way and he's an incredible farrier, but always HOURS late without letting you know, which drove me up the wall. If I had a horse with problem feet and/or issues (like my last one), I'd live with the timekeeping issue and use JN again, but Uppington are fine for the horse I have now.

Dentist, I use Sam Oakes who is v good though not from the area so can be difficult to get him here and tends to need a lot of notice.

I have Mike from Uppington Smithy to trim my lad. He was one of the only farriers in Shropshire I called who was willing to come out my way. He's always prompt and always willing to be flexible with me to suit my working hours which I'm always grateful for and unlike a lot of farriers, he will always fit me in at fairly short notice. He was also great when my old youngster was getting gelded and we thought we'd trim his feet whilst he was under, things didn't go to plan and it meant him coming back and forth to the yard once we'd finally sedated him. I was just really pleased with his co-operation. I generally just text him when I need him to come out so don't have to wait for a call back so can't comment on that.

I used to have Oli Roberts years ago but we won't go there!! Good farrier though.

Thanks for the replies - I've got Matt Carter coming out this afternoon to do teeth - he's a EDT chap so fingers crossed he's good! Needed a man to do the job as all three horses are 17hh plus - I was afraid a femal dentist wouldn't be able to reach!

Still searching for a farrier though - thought I'd found one, but he also charges VAT. The yard owner here has Mike from Uppington so I've seen his work.

I've heard Oli Roberts is a good farrier - trouble is, we need the farrier the most in the winter when we're hunting .... and Oli shoes to hunt rather than the other way round - we're generally at the same meets!
