Never seen them in horses but accompanied my American cousins to the vets with their cats when I was holidaying there and watched the vet cut open the 'wound' and pluck out the grubs. Revolting!"
not so long ago there was the most amazing clip on utube [sorry dont have the link] of a person with warbles in their back!!! it showed them being pulled out and what they look like, their horrible heads with all these hook like things to keep them in.!!
As for in this country i have seen them in cornwall up until the early/ mid 80's but know that they have been irradicated in the UK, or so the vet told me.
My first pony had one now this is going back over 30 years whilst kept on a dairy farm, it was quite horrific, from what i can remember only beeing 7/8yrs old, it was autumn or winter took his nz rug off and when to put on saddle and he went mad now usually really quiet pony, got the farmer to have a look and he knew straight away what was going on, so pony put in a stable for a few days and eventually the maggot thing came through his back leaving like a lid and a horrible hole, we did have vet but it was so long ago have trouble remembering what was said but being a child i found it like something out of a horror film, saying that once pony all healed up he was fine, but it was a nasty experience for him.
Ive not seen warbles for over 20 years, the last time was in Devon on the wither of a hunt horse. Quite revolting and had to be removed by the vet. Horse was off for a long time as there was no way it could be saddled or ridden.
Ten years ago, our first smallholding was next to a dairy farm, high up on the Welsh hills. I found a couple of really noise, slow moving HUGEEEEE insects buzzing around the horses. I knocked one off and it fell to the ground stunned. I captured it in a bottle and took it to the vets (as I had never seen anything like it) who confirmed it was a Warble Fly.
was this recenty or a long time ago when warbles were still prevalent. i have spoken to several people recently who say they have had a warble in their horses this year but if you mention it to you vet he will say it is probably a form of collagen granuloma but having looked this up it is said to be pain less...what my mare had caused her discomfort for about a week so still not convinced its not a warble.
