I opened my new bigger bag of haylage on Saturday last week. First day it was fine but have noticed last 2 days it has become warm? Is it alright to still feed it? Pete does not seem put off and it cools off when shaken out. He doesn't have stomach troubles or anything. Mum was a bit worried so I thought I would ask here. If something is wrong hopefully its just one bag as we bought 2. It is from a reputable producer - Topscore. I am wondering if they have a telephone number?

Thanks!

I thought it was quite normal, big bales were often warm and unless white mould on them i always still fed to no detriment that i know of. Willing to be put right by anyone who knows for sure though.

Warm tends to mean that the haylage is gaining bacteria and can mould. So long as you check that there are no white little spots or patches, then you should be ok to feed. Its not the producer that causes it.. its a little thing called bacteria in the air

I understood that small amounts of white mould are OK - and the horses will leave them ; but green or black mould are lethal and if it's a small bale reject and return. If it's a big bale I try to take out all the haylage around it if it's in a corner, otherwise I reject the bale and tell my supplier to collect and give me a replacement bale.

If the bale is getting warm get as much air to it as possible; ie remove from wrap and put on pallet or similar, to cool it and stop the fermentation(?) process. Use it as quickly as possible because it will start to smell musty very quickly and then should not be fed (probably not applicable with a small bale).

Ours often has warm areas and we dont worry about it. I was told a while back off reputable haylage man that if the mould is white and just rubs off easily then its nothing to worry about. To be honest though I always throw any suspect bits away. Obviously if there were large areas of mould, white or not then I'd not feed it.

haylage once opened should be consumed in 3 to 4 days. if it heats up ie fermentes you run a HIGH risk of botulism that can kill your horses! buy your bale size in accordance to the mouths that have to be fed.

Haylage often gets warm and I was always told to pull off what you need, shake it up, leave for a while to cool down and then feed. White is okay, green or black mould is a definite no no. Always remove all the wrapping as this will cause it to go off very quickly and never lock rolls away as they will sweat and go off, keep them under cover but they need air around them to stop them going off.

[/ QUOTE ]Yes absolutely. It gets hot because of secondary fermentation by whatever bacteria happen to infect it.Listen to ofcourseyoucan!!! This IS the right answer!!
