My 7year old gelding, after XC training yest appeared to have a inflammed front left leg down his cannon bone. I cold hosed it and massaged a cooling gel onto it, and this morning the swelling down the cannon bone had gone, but there was still some heat towards the bottom of the cannon bone, I then cold hosed and put more cooling gel on again.

The day before the XC training he jumped out of the field (into a part where it is quite wet and boggy) and cantered and bucked around, and there was slight heat in his leg the morning of the training.

It was the first event we had done all winter, and last year his front legs did swell slighty after our first event as well.

Also I am meant to be going to another training day in 3days time, will I be creating further damage to his legs if I go?

Does anyone have any suggestions of what could be wrong?

If there is heat and swelling in a leg I certainly wouldn't be thinking about going to any training day as what you are describing could be anything from soreness to tendon check ligament or any other sort of pull or strain .
I would be resting the horse at least and cold water hosing and probably I would get the vet out .
Any sort of intense work could turn a minor thing into something that needs months of rest if not limit the horses use for the rest of its life!!!.
We can't just do something because we want to the welfare of the horse must come first at least in my opinion.
I would always be cautious with swelling and heat.

You don't mention if the horse is actually sound?

I guess if there was already heat and swelling present BEFORE you went and did XC it's only to be expected that there may be more heat and swelling afterwards.

Not sure I'd have gone myself (actually I am sure, I know I wouldn't have gone), even though I'd have been disappointed to miss out, if my horse wasn't 100% and I can't imagine I'd be going again in three days time either.

Best of luck for your horse's recovery from whatever it might be that's troubling him.

Echo don't even ride him in walk until it is normal and call the vet
