Got horse in from field to ride at 6 a.m and was picking out feet. Realised that his off fore was pretty warm, slightly filled with a warm foot. All other legs were stone cold. He does have a scrape on a hind leg which is new so wonder if he's bashed himself.

Unless he's been hooning around the field I can't think what he's done because he's only on walking. We are on week 3 now and he is doing some fairly steep hills but has seemed to cope with them fine. We are on flinty ground so could he have a bruised sole? Would it travel up the leg at all? I didn't manage to trot him up as was on my own and noone to help. He didn't seem bothered by me poking and prodding at all. Filling went down as I led him back to the field but then came up again as he was standing by the gate. He has very skinny, long TB legs so filling noticeable by touch but not sight and only very slightly. I probably wouldn't have noticed if it wasn't warm and the others stone cold.

Any ideas?!!! Also in Vets.

Forgot to say that there is an enlarged vein at top of leg just below knee on inside prob. due to inflammation. Leg warm all over but mostly nearer bottom and I think fetlock the warmest bit.

Assume your horse is coming back into work following some injury? If the injury was nothing to do with that leg then I would be inclined to think he has just been hooning around the field as it sounds as if you are being careful with bringing him back into work. If it was me I would be cold hosing a couple of times a day and if it is still there in a couple of days then think about calling the vet but I wouldn't be worrying too much at this stage.

His injury was to his back and also he had his spavin treated. He's been out since April last year in the field.

I have to say I think he felt very sound yesterday morning as he was practising his "elevated" paces past the pig farm so I'm sure its a recent thing. Sounds silly but I can't actually remember feeling his legs recently although I feel them every day when he has his feet picked out. Does that make sense?!!

Sounds to me like it could be the start of an abcess in the hoof.... You find that there is heat in the leg, can be up to their shoulder..... The symptoms of an abcess can come on really quickly
