Always get a reputable mechanic to check it before you buy it.

We went to look at a box that looked lovely, just what we wanted and had passed its MOT the day before having had lots of items replaced. We were really happy with it and thought it would be ideal.

OH decided to err on the side of caution and pay for the RAC to inspect it and he found that it was actually dangerous and had numerous faults.

I don't blame the sellers in the slightest, they were lovely people, just had been let down badly by the mechanic who had been doing up the box for them to sell.

Always get your box checked, he reckoned that we could have been killed if we were in an accident.

Very good advice, especially with these older boxes, as you have no idea what they have been through and how much 'sealing over the cracks' work has been done. My old lorry which I've just sold has just passed its RAC check with flying colours, it was good to know that it was a sound horse box as we bought it via ebay, without having it properly checked out, and just trusting the word of the seller! That was lucky, because even the most honest of people do not know what sort of hidden problems there are in a horsebox.

DWI what are you looking for in a lorry? ive got mine back up for sale after a set of timewasters said they would by it and never turned up.

i got my new lorry checked by my mechanic who i trust implicitly.

I find it alarming that it passed an MOT the DAY before you went to see it! The garage must have been dodgy then?!

Not in the slightest. The lorry MOT is about the same as a car one and makes no allowance for the fact that it will be carrying livestock. The MOT doesnt ensure the vehicle is safe, thats for a specialist inspector to do.

the inspector didn't get as far as whether it was safe for a horse.

he wouldn't even road test it because he said it was dangerous. I don't want to go into specifics because its not fair on the people selling it if someone else reads it but the things the inpector failed it on you would have failed a car on

In that case you need to report the VOSA test station that tested it. It's about safety and roadworthiness and we all have a right to expect that lorries are inspected to the correct standard - ie more carefully than a car!
