I have been asked to remind people that the unusual amount of snow may cause barns and stables to collapse. A farmer in scotland has been injured when a steel frame building,s roof gave way, and in a separate incident a pony had to be PTS after a roof collapsed.Obviously, dont try to climb on the roof. But please be aware of the danger . It has been sugested that throwing a rope over the roof and dragging it along betwean two people might help clear some. (I dont know as I havnt tried it)

On our normal height stables (ie not a big barn) we put a broom on as far as it would go and just dragged the snow off the front. This worked pretty well, and the stables were lighter after the snow had been cleared from the clear panels too.

Thank you for the warning!

What we used to do in France where we used to get pretty heavy snow fall is to get a rope and sort of run it flat against the roof to cut through the snow as close to the roof as possible. The snow then lies as an unstable flat block against the roof and a good shove with a rake or similar will dislodge it and it should slide off easily in a big sheet.
