We have been lucky enough to purchase the land behind our house, so I now have the Lardy pair plus a pony at home. Last night a neighbour stopped by to tell me that he had seen a man in our field checking the horses teeth and feet and it was the second time he had seen him – at first he thought it might have been the vet but went out to check. The chap was Irish and told him that these were very well looked after animals (pampered might be a better way to describe it) and did the owners live locally? At this point I went into complete panic and shock. The neighbour told me he then left and got into a black pickup truck parked just far enough away that the neighbour could not get the number. Unfortunately we have a footpath running across the bottom of the field so cannot completely keep people out of the field.

As you can imagine we now have every gate double locked and hubby bless him went to bed fully clothed and got up every hour to check from the window – I slept a lot better, the window was open so if one was removed from the stable the others would soon alert us and as neither of mine are very speedy loaders in daylight I doubt they would consider entering any lorry or trailer in darkness. So today they are locked into their field, the police are coming over to take a statement and the vet is coming to chip Buck, Donks and the pony are already chipped.

But joking aside please be aware that this is real and not some sort of rumour Very real and scary to me and if anyone knows anything or anyone like this can they pm me please?

Ooh, not nice but good that your neighbour actually went and spoke to them. At least they know the field is "watched".

Do you have them freezemarked as well as chipped?

wow thats scary!!!!!

You have a very good neighbour for doing that!! and a very caring OH for sleeping fully clothed!!!

You can get fake CCTV cameras to put on your house (we got some after being robbed) and they might be worth putting on the stables etc just as a deterent? or even real ones if you can afford it!

don't forget to secure the gate at the hinge side as well as putting a paddlock on

if you weld some metal so they can't lift the hinges that helps, also if you can change the access so that they have to go through your garden and block the field access we use to use a very large tree trunk

I also have a footpath running along the bottom of my field. I don't live at my place so am now worried. I do have one of the horses that is like a guard dog and if he sees anyone in the field he goes and checks them out followed by 5 others.

whereabouts in nottingham area are you?

I would definately invest in having them freezemarked then advertise the fact with a sign on your gate, I had all of mine done even my £50 shettie it cost more than he was bought for. But it does seem to be the only real deterrant that works, hope that by the neighbour going out to this man as put him off coming back.
