The post office is still ripe with theft.

Sent a passport off to the WPCS for name changing and got a nice letter back saying the envelope had been opened and the passport and cheque stolen. Said it was ' slit' not damaged etc etc.

Didn't send recorded delivery as don't work anywhere near a post office and wanted it sent off quickly. My mistake.

Spoke to a postie on saturday who said they haven't a clue who they take on staff wise and theft is common.

His advice - always send anything of importance if not value registered as they make more money and can't guarantee their staff aren't thieves so registered provides a paper trail.

Nice.

I send nothing through Royal Mail unless it is sent Recorded Delivery. Trust me, it just isn't worth it these days. I live in a rural location so have to travel to the nearest PO too. I've learnt the hard way, it just isn't worth it.

Cancel the cheque, and request a new passport! Inform the passport issuers by e-mail of the situation...maybe the thief will be caught out trying to use your passport.
