So last few weeks my lad has been letahrgic, generally not himself under saddle, i went down feed route spoke to a nutririonist, changed his diet and did seem a bit more forward but still not 100%.

Then last two week started stumbling a lot and knee seemd to be giving way, vet called to check fo lami but all fine, physio been all fine there, saddle fits well.

Anyway now for the yucky bit, i discovered last thursday he had maggots in 3 of his frogs ((gutted i missed it)) , someone had suggested his shoes may be pushing on his frog so i pushed on frog to test and maggots shot out, on further investigation and digging they had eaten holes into the middle of his frogs. was completely unnoticable till i pushed :( prior to this i had been treating him for minor thrush at sides of his frog and didnt spot it ( i feel terrrible ) was shod 4 weeks ago and maggots werent there then.

anyway farrier came and cut back his frogs for me, vets called said to tub his feet with hot water to which i am adding hibi scrub, dettol and salt. He flatly refuses to tub his back feet ( has a chronic fear of water:rolleyes:) so have been sponging it through, then have been syringing diluted hydrogen peroxide into and through cracks left in frogs to flush them before applying summer fly cream ( this is especially for killing and preventing maggots) and spraying with terramycin ( blue spray).

Maggots now appear to have all gone but i will continue treatment ( except tubbing) for a couple of weeks before eventually just painting his frogs with the fly cream every day as a preventative.

My question is do you think this is what his problem has been ( def think it caused the tripping and knee problem as knee was like a reluctance to put heel down).

Would you rest or keep riding ( he really needs to be worked for his weight management) he hasnt been lame at all. Also would you think it would be sore ( he had no prob with me digging maggots out or farrier cutting his frog away) and if so how long would you expect for it to feel better for him?

His front foot seems almost back to normal but back ones still quite deep and hollow where maggots were.

He was still not 100% when i rode him out on a gentle hack at weekend ( although perfectly sound) not as forward going as he usually is and towards end of hack kept pulling his head to the floor.

I am just concerned about him and would like other peoples opinions as on my own and love my boy to bits want him happy again and willing to do anything to get him back to his old self :)

sorry for long post

omg I've never heard of this before, the poor little sole! but at least if they weren't there 4 weeks ago when he was shod they can't have been there that long! bless him!

I wouldn't carry on riding him myself, I would give him a bit of time off to let it heal! did the vet know how this might have happened? was it because of the thrush?

Eew! Poor lad, glad you managed to find what was causing his problems :(

I would give him a while off, sounds a pretty grotty thing to have gone through.

Well i was motified when i found it lol, i to have never in 25 years seen it before.:(

On speaking to vet and farrier they apparently have seen a lot of cases this year due to flies being bad, they said prob caused by horses standing in droppings with flies on, flies get into feet and lay eggs or they pick eggs up off the droppings. Even though i pick his feet out daily he still got it :(

Said with thrush only being mild prob not the cause.

i was thinking give him some time off , will just have to restrict him a bit more whilst out of work.

it was awful to find, once disturbed the smell was horrendous, i very nearly parted with my stomach contents! yucky! his back feet are worst randomly one front foot fine other not to bad.

so gald i found it although didnt stop me feeling like a bad owner :( lol x

I wouldn't ride him. We have a ewe which had a mild attack of fly strike, caught very early almost 2 months ago and she is still hasn't got her stamina back.
I have found that tea-tree oil sprayed on the site gets rid of maggots beautifully, so would use that in future as a preventative.

Ahh i have tee tree oil which i put in my fly spray so will use some thanks:)

so do you think the maggots have stolen his get up and go as well as making his feet sore? Didntthink they would have sapped his energy with being in his feet just made him a bit foot sore but may explain why he is a bit off still.

will def rest him a while. Thanks

Yuk, never heard of this before.
Is he out ? just wondering if movement might help with circulation and healing ? If he isnt in pain then perhaps some gentle walking out would be good ?. I would check with my vet if I were you though.
Best of luck

Maggots only take about 36 hours to hatch and will be attracted to thrushy feet. They don't like salt so you could use a big syringe to flush a high concentration of salt water into the back feet. They will surely have been causing his issues, it is a miserable thing for an animal to have however he will recover very quickly and normally maggots actually improve feet (because the manky tissue is eaten away).

The stress of having them wiggling about and him not being able to get rid of the itch/burn will be why he appears lethargic and depressed.

Thanks ffionwinnie i have been adding salt to his foot flush but will do it more concentrated, farrier said isnt bad for feet and wont cause lasting damage but isnt nice for them.

How long would you expect it to take for him to feel better in himself? i have been treating since thursday night and maggots appear to have gone although yesterday he had trodden in pooh and was stamping that foot a lot so wonder if more hatched, so flushed it extra well (wish he would let me tub it)and was much better this morning. I plan to keep treating for at least a week then if looking ok start prevention.

maree t - vet was consulted and knows what treatment etc i am using but may ask them how long he will be sore for. thanks.

You could spray some coopers spot on into it if you are worried. Wear gloves tho. Crovect would also do (for sheep). Never tried it on a horse but doubt it would be a problem just on the feet. If it was a sheep it would take about a week to get over it just in their feet, probably.

Just check his sheath incidentally.

Stamping is a definite sign but he could just be remembering.

Hi thanks will look into what you have suggested :)

I am going to give him a week off, spoke to vets they are putting up some bute to see if it helps the soreness. I have checked his sheath as someone inboxed me to tell me her gelding had them in his sheath. fortunatley my lads is clear but i am now taking preventitive measures just incase lol :)
