Just had a young horse vetted. She has found two wart like structures on her midline close to udders.
The Vet is 70% sure they are warts however there is a risk they are sarcoids.
My insurers have said they would exclude sarcoids from insurance.
So do i ask the owner to test them? or would i have to pay to test? or walk away.
She is only two so a high chance they are warts.

Only way to 'test' for sarcoids is to remove one whole to send it off. Biopsy isn't an option as it can trigger fibroblastic changes (angry ulcerated sarcoids which are difficult to treat).
But without histopathy you can't say 100% whether it is a sarcoids or not.
Whilst its probably more likely they're warts at this age you can see youngsters with sarcoids.

Personally it wouldn't put me off a nice horse at a good price as long as try are nowhere near tack positions/joints/areas which rub.

Thank-you for your reply.
I have decided to go ahead with the purchase at a reduced price.
I spoke to my vet and the vet who vetted her. If they are sarcoids they are the verroucus (spelling) type so should not cause too much trouble in the future if left well alone, they are out of the way. But most likley warts only time will tell.

Happy to take the risk as she has a lovley temperment and has started groundwork and halter training. The vet who vetted her said she coped really well with the vetting and all that was asked of her. Cant ask much more of a 2 year old.

Insurance is a bit of a pain, but might be able to get the restrition lifted in the future... Its a gamble but thats horses..

Be careful what you say to insurance!
I bought a horse with sarcoids found at vetting. Being totally honest here lol When I spoke to insurance company I thought I was being 'clever' and said I couldn't remember if vet said warts or sarcoids. I was told by insurer it was best to be sarcoids as if it was warts they would exclude any kind of cancer too. But wouldnt with sarcoids. No idea why though

The insurers have asked to see the vetting report.
It's almost like u get punished for being responsible. If I had not had a vetting would I have been able to get full insurance??

Most insurers have a purchse price limit on vettings - so to insure for more than £5k with one insurer you need a 5 stage vetting - other insurers the upper limit is just £2.5k. You were honest told them you had the horse vetted hence their request to see the report.
