I went to try a horse at the weekend and really liked him so i'm thinking about buying him. The only thing is, he had some sort of weird skin thing round the base of one of his ears. It was black and hairless and bumpy, like kind of warty. It was only round one ear and the owner said in the 4 years they'd had him it had never caused a problem, didn't bother him and they'd tried to get rid of it but nothing had worked so they'd given up. Obviously when I get him vetted i'll ask her to check it out, but just wanted to know if anybody knows what it is? Is it a problem? Cheers

If they are pale and inside the ears they are prob the aural plaques, my boy has them, makes briding a bit interesting as it makes him earshy and hes 17hh :-(( They dont do damage other than make the ears painful to bend and our RVC vet said not to try any treatment as applying creams etc generally makes the horse more ear shy still!

But if they are dark and on the external then some kind of wart or sarcoid would be more likely.

Def one for the vet....

Hi I would certainly have the horse vetted and ask them what it is, but my horse had a black pea sized 'wart' according to the vet on the edge of one ear, it was no problem til she rolled on hard ground and rubbed the edge off, then it started growing looking pink and fleshy quite unsightly but not bothering her.I tried all usual creams but nothing healed it, then i remembered I had some camrosa and started using that, it is very messy but now couple of months later its gone! everyone thats seen it is amazed. I don't know how it works and I only used it as a last resort but fascinating.
