Hi just about to consider having my boy referred to see if he has kissing spine following a Thermographic Scan. Thermal Images indicate possible KS.

Vet wants me to go down scintgraphy route then x-rays.

Question when your KS was suspected did your vet x-ray first or send you for a bone scan then x-rays?

we had the gamma scan first then xrays but insurance covered this
i think the scan alone was around £1200 and then extra for xrays and stabling as they need 48 hours in isolation after the scan

Latest case - x rayed first then medicated to make sure that the impinging spinous processes are the actual cause of discomfort. Post mortems apparently show approx 80% of horses have impinging spinous processes but in most cases they cause no problem so x rays alone are not definitive. The medication has been a success but has unearthed other issues. Horse is not lame but clearly very uncomfortable so now onto bone scan to find out what else is going on before deciding whther to operate for KS or not.

My horse only had xrays as the kissing spines were so bad that it was clear that this was the reason for our problems. he had 5 dorsal processes removed in the end, 3 of which were more or less fused.
