Washing a LeMeiux sheepskin girth cover.... an idiot proof way please

I wash all my sheepskin numnahs on 30 degrees quick wash, using liquid detergent for delicates/handwash, then line dry them or hang over a chair etc - come up like new and are still nice and soft and fluffy :)

Put some cheap human hair conditioner on it, then non bio washing stuff, quick wash on 30 degrees. I then brush it out with the dogs wire brush, this fluffs it back up, then dry away from artificial heat.

I've followed this for years and by sheepskins still look as new :)!

See, I know the hair conditioner thing is popular, but I wash all sheep skin products (and things with leather bits) in specialist soap. It's true, the risk is less if it's just hair and not hide involved, but given the cost of such items I prefer to go with the best possible option. I have a sheepskin pad (with hide) that's got to be 15 years old now and a trainer of mine had one that was probably twice that.

when you say specialist soap TS, which do you use?

I slather mine in human hair conditioner then stick in the machine on a gently cycle with wool washing liquid.

My preference is for Pepede but I've used other oil soaps as well. In a pinch I'll use a wool garment soap, which doesn't strip the oils but doesn't seem to bring anything positive either.
