fairy washing up liquid, (the green stuff) and if you can find a blue bag to soak tail in even better, if not then the stuff you use for soaking net curtains in(not sure of the name) oh and i forgot elbow grease lol

My mare poos and pees on her tail so we have to do a little routine before a show.
Wash twice in washing up liquid. Make white washing powder into a paste and smear onto the worst bits and leave for 20 mins. Wash off and wash tail with blue shampoo, the stuff for white horses. Then I have to plait the tail up so she doesn't poo/pee on it again.
Going to have to do this today and my boy as both going to a show tomorrow.

purple shampoo or silver shampoo as some call it you can buy it from most saddlery/equine stores i used it on jacob and its fabby you can buy it in powder too.

I use the cheapo baby shampoo from Asda (39p), I have been told to use Daz/Ariel but can't quite bring myself to do it. I find a good scrub, plenty of elbow power included and then a really good rinse. Sometimes if her tail is particularly yellowy I give it another go but once usually does the trick - as Shaab just said Net Curtain Whitener added to the rinse water does the trick too, also something called 'Reckitts blue' which is great for getting whites really white. It is hard to come by now though.

For tails I find washing powder (made into a thick past) works best. Leave it on for 15 mins and rinse thoroughly.

Also spray liberally and regularly with conditioner / silicon spray to prevent further stains.

I use Tresemme clarifying shampoo, then rinse, then any whitening shampoo, then Red Rum Tail Whitener spray, lather up and leave for a few minutes.
