As title really, I have a lovely baby blue thermatex and the time has come for it's first wash/clean. The instructions say it can be machine washed but should it be sent away for cleaning to be on the safe side? I don't want it to shrink!

Wash it in woolite ( or dreft auto or similar )at 30 never let it get too dirty , I think my oldest one was bought in 1991 it's not in show condition any more but still working most days in winter .
Oh and never dry on a radiator or Aga just hang on a rack or the line .

Thanks Goldenstar. Will use your advice, I knew there would be some good thermatex washing knowledge on here. He only wears it travelling and at parties, so just needs a freshen up.

Ooh good thread as mine needs a wash... Does anyone know a good way of removing shavings from the blinking things first?! I think I need to wrap myself in parcel tape sticky side outwards and roll around on it myself!!!

Mine is rather ancient but its been machine washed many times and comes out beautiful again. Let it dry naturally and never store it near pesky mice. :(

Wash on a cool wash with some gentle liquid - i use the Numed stuff. I dry mine over doors in the house. No artificial heat.

I wash mine in the orange mesh rug wash bags and the shavibfs come off in the bag. A long bristled flick brush is good for removing shavings too

I have had 2 of them since I was 18 years old, and I am 47 now!

I have always bunged them in the wash, and then dried them in a drier at medium heat. The drier removes the shavings (!). That is a big commercial drier though, with a good filter.

They do not look new now, but are still very serviceable.
