I got my new Mare around 10days ago..
She doesn't do anything wrong (except abit nervous and shows your her bum Alot)
But for some reason i have No bottle to ride her without my friend there, im driving myself nuts!!
I've had 2 short rides on her since getting her, both times with my friend there to get me on her & walk next to us!!
I don't know why im being like this, everytime i've said im going to ride without her there, i've come up with an excuse
Any tips as i feel im depending on my friend yet i don't want my mare to feel my nerves:confused:

Ten days in nothing in the scale of things, don't be too hard on yourself! If your friend is happy escorting you then stick for that until you feel ready, no reason to rush things until you are happy doing something.

Don't be so hard on yourself. You are unsure of a situation and so have friends there for moral support. I was exactly the same when I got Archie, only I was so scared I had to go on a lead rein! When my confidence in him grew there as no stopping us but I only rode him on my own when I felt confident enough to do so. You have plenty of time ahead of you to enjoy yourselves so if you need a friend or two there don't worry about it.

Good luck x

dont' put the pressure on yourself to do it alone.
alot of the times it's better to ride with someone around anyway. if one day you get to the yard and get the urge to do something with her then go for it, every little step you take will do you good.

maybe tack up your horse and sit on her, give her a pat then get back off. at least then you can say you've done that without someone being there.
or you could ask your friend to stay in the background while you do something but just come over when you need her to.

relax, you've not had your mare long so don't expect too much from either of you! ;)

Give yourself time! you`ve only had her a short time.
i`ve had my mare over a year and i sometimes get nervous about going out on our own, and dont often, its mainly because of the main road and i dont like riding on it in company either. But also if i did come off i wouldnt want my horse getting injured if she done a runner, not wanting to hack on your own is quite a sensible option :D
I`m sure after a few hacks out you`ll be fine, how about taking her for a walk on foot on your own, you`ll spend some quality time together and see how she does handle being on her own:)

I was like this with Koko I've had him 3 months now and I'm just confident riding him without someone there. Just give it time you'll feel confident soon just keep saying to yourself she won't do anything I can do this! It worked wonders for me and I even galloped in an open field the other day :o

To be honest I think your being rather sensible, you've only had a 10 days so your still getting to know each other and she's still getting to know her new surroundings, so really I think it's a good thing that your riding with someone around until your fully confident on her, otherwise you wouldn't of typed this post.

So don't worry, get to know her while you have someone around. :)

I felt a little like that with my mare last week.

I've had her ten years!!!!!!

We all feel like this from time to time. Have you got an instructor you can have some lessons with? Take it slowly- Spend lots of time on the ground with her. Don't rush yourself- even if you just tack up and get on or have a little walk around- build up both of your confidence.

Ditto the well done for being sensible comments- good idea to have someone with you whilst you're still getting used to each other.

Phewww i feel a million times better now :o

The two ladies at my hard have had there horse's over 15++ years and everyday its the usual, arn't you going to ride her on your own yet

I'll keep you posted on how tonight 'windy walk' goes:p

Thanks guys

You are right to be careful, you really don't know her yet. I came off my boy when trying to mount out on a hack, he bucked and bolted leaving me winded on the roadside and him galloping home down a single track lane!!! Took me 6 months before I'd even put my foot in the stirrup unless someone was standing with me..so 10 days is nothing honestly. Stop kicking yourself and relax and you'll know then the time is right to go it alone. Enjoy your horse, spend time with her on the ground bonding and it will all pay off in the end.

Well take no notice of them, has nothing to do with anyone else how soon you decided to take her out on her own, what's the rush?

As an old lady having owned horses over 40 years, I'd say you are being very sensible and the 2 old biddies must have owned their horses for a long time or they go out riding together and I must admit it is fun to have someone to natter to while out hacking.:):):):):)
