Always been uninterested in auto drinkers, but took the plunge and ordered one however Robinsons sent the wrong one so ordered two more (the correct one) so will get refund on the other. Seems a nice drinker with plug hole for cleaning.

My question is how often do you empty yours and clean the bowl??

thanx

Whenever it's needed. Mine is nowhere near the hay, so remains relatively clean for a month or so. A friend's is right next to the hay so needs cleaning out more often. Just do it when needed, there's no hard and fast rule.

Daily to clean the bowl and at least weekly to clean around the float, armed with a bucket and a pot scourer brush, also a screw driver to be able to get to the float behind its panel.

Only needs a grain or two to drop in the water for the whole thing to become sour.

Daily to pull the plug, let it drain into a bucket whilst having a swoosh round with a clean sponge. When empty allow to re-fill.

Once a month or so to turn off the supply, drain and have a go inside the gubbins (the bit under the cover), with more gusto.

They are next to the manger due to the layout of the stable / hay rack etc. I am doing them weekly but they have only been installed 2 weeks. There was some food in them, they have a plug hole under which I use tub bucket and feed the water to the roses. The plumber also installed a cut off handle on the wall at arms length for easy turning individual water off to it.

Watch out for limescale build up on the floaty thing (depends where you live) It can prove disastrous, causing either a flood or no water at all.

I think you've gone for the ones I was looking at HGA-12, how are you finding them? I have two itchy ponies and concerned they might be easy to itch off the walls?

Mine don't have a plug - however my horses are clean and they only get little bits of straw in them if it has been windy.

I use a jug to take out the water, a quick sponge to clean the bowl, sponge out the little water in the bottom and then let them refill - this possibly works because they are large drinkers and fill fairly slowly.

We clean them once a week or more often if needed.

As required, which is generally every 7 - 10 days (unless we have swallows pooping in them, grrrr). Mine also have plug at the bottom and cut off switch.

Not too bad, my boy is still scared of the whooshing sound so I did put apple juice in the water to start with but not now. But have not seen him drinking out of it yet but have the livery one, I think he has had one in his stable before these owners had him. I brought the Sureflow one, the plug makes it easy to empty. Not doing all the stables as some owners don't want one or they have an itchy horse, the one who has one I mention above does wind-suck but does not use it to windsuck on.

Have you thought about one of these??? http://www.robinsonsequestrian.com/scratch-patch-pair-black.html

Ours dont have removable plugs either. I wondered how to clean them, then another livery said get a sponge and a bucket and sponge the water out in to the bucket, wipe round, sponge out again and let refill, only took a few minutes.

I always clean them out every day. I would never just top up a water bucket, it would be scrubbed and have fresh water. Water bowls whatever size are easy to clean, with or without plug. Large sponge ( the big car washing sponges are great) and bucket that is kept just for this and just wipe the bowl with sponge to get slime off and then swipe into bucket with the sponge. I can go around the whole yard in a short time and then water the planters with the water.
