When my horse comes in for the day for some hay and rest from the sun for about 6 hours he doesn't drink any water. It is put in fresh in a clean bucket. As soon as he goes out he drinks loads from the water tank. In winter he drinks ok from his stable buckets. Any ideas why ? The only thing I can think of is The water tank in the field does seem slightly colder

I think they are just contrary, I had one here that would drink nothing in the stable over the summer, he had two containers in the field they were changed alternate days to fresh so one was always a few days old and turning green, guess which one he drank from by choice, yes the green water that needed changing, so much for giving them fresh water to drink.

I have known horses turn their noses up at clean fresh tap water in favour of a muddy dew pond - maybe the fluoride or whatever in mains water is something they try and avoid?

water tank is run off mains though ! There is a growth of duckweed that needs removing daily so perhaps it is the taste of that he prefers !
