This bit is advertised as "severe" in the Shires catalogue but I have always been led to believe it is a moderately kind bit that stops the horse grabbing hold. Just because it has a bit of poll pressure as well surely it doesn't make it "severe"?

I think they have to put that because in the wrong hands it can be severe. Its to cover their backsides.

the reason they see it as severe is the mouth piece, not so much the cheek piece, but as with any other bit, severe in the wrong hands.

The waterford is not sever compared to others on the market, you just need to make sure that there is no sawing at the mouth and as most people do I hop, use soft hands
