NS have recommended this bit for my strong hunter and have assured me it doesn't pinch the tongue.

Does anyone have any experience of it please and can re-assure me it really isn't as harsh as it looks!

Thank you

Waterford's are very harsh, its kind of liek having a chain in your horses mouth so they can lean on it and take hold of the bit, is this what your horse does? Don't get me wrong they work, my new horse came in one and I spent a long time trying to get him out of a waterford as I just don't like them. You need very quiet hands.

Personally I think if your trying a wateford for the first time I would try it with just a snaffle so your horse can get used to the action and then if he's still strong look at this bit.

It is a strong bit, no doubt. However, I hired one yesterday to try XC as last time I went out we ended up in a hauling match in his lozenge snaffle and it was not pleasant for either of us. Yesterday he didn't lean, he didn't fight when I asked him to come back, and he was actually a much more pleasant chap to ride, as ever bits are as harsh as your hands. I would rather give him a tweak in a Waterford than haul in a snaffle.

And no, there wasn't any tongue pinching, I was actually more concerned it would pinch the bars of his mouth, but again nothing. Maybe hire one from a bit bank first, to make sure it suits you both?

I have a 6 inch 8029ns NS Waterford "NS" Jumper that I'm looking to sell - only used it once. PM me if you're interested.

My fussy, thick lipped/tongued, sensitive mare prefers a waterford to anything else, though it's a D ring not a "Jumper". She isn't especially strong, but it does stop her leaning when having an onward bound moment and means I can bring her back quickly with a light touch when needed. It's not a bit to consider for anyone heavy-handed, novice-y or prone to "applying discipline through the mouth" (!), but if it suits the horse... ? Got to be worth a trial, the NS guys do seem to know their stuff.

Thanks everyone, I'm still in doubt though. She doesn't grab the bit, she is just very very strong when out hunting ( as they all are! ) and she isn't new to it so I doubt she will calm down now.

I ride her normally in a myler eggbutt mullen barrel after trying various snaffles etc, and she is fine in it, in fact we do hunter trials in it with no problem. I hunted her last season in a Sprenger Universal on the bottom ring but it made absolutely no difference at all and I had no control.

I really want to start the season with some brakes, and although I don't want to be hauling on her which is what I'm currently doing I don't want to hurt her in any way either.

I mentioned the Cheltenham Gag with eggbutt cheeks to NS but they didn't feel this was an option as it needs double reins. That confused me a bit as I didn't realise it did, but I am still not convinced by the waterford jumper.

Bruised - thanks but too big for my girl.
