Waterford Pelham

the action of a crub bit (pelham) is designed to only have a straight mouthpiece, this allows the curb action to be used properly (when do you ever see a jointed weymouth) but in these 'modern times' there are hundreds of different mouth pieces going.
a waterford mouthpiece curves around the mouth and creates a very equal pressure all over the mouth.
Basically the action of the waterford pelham will be a mixture of them both but the curb action will be reduced slightly due to the flexable mouthpiece and you will need to be really soft and subtle with your aids as the bit will be quite 'unstable' in the mouth.
hope that made sence!!!

These are a useful bit for a horse which leans/takes hold but has too high a head carriage esp coming into a fence. The neue schule bitting helpline advised me to use one, but shop4bits never delivered it (they didn't take any money either, so I guess we're even) and with an event approaching I went for the nearest thing in the tackshop, a single jointed pelham. This has transformed my horse's way of going over a SJ and XC and gives me plenty of brakes out on the course. They are not to be dismissed just because pelhams are traditionally straight bar - yes the action is slightly different, but they can be very effective for the right horse.

Finding the right bit for a horse is trial and error. I found this particular bit was not right for my horse whereas it may be good for another horse.

My horse loves his NS translozenge universal bit, unfortunately it took 5 years to find one he liked. The search was not helped by the fact he takes a size 6 1/2"!! Still better late than never.

Its worth remembering that a bit is only as severe as the hands at the end of it.

Higlandponylass- my boy is a 6 1/2" too! It is super difficult to get any different bits in that size without paying huge money!!

Spottedcat- My boy has very high head carriage into the fence, and really takes hold both sj and xc. With a normal straight pelham he was still too strong xc and it didn't really help SJ.
Think I will definately have to invest in one if I can find one big enough!!

I use one on my cob and it's great, he's not normally strong but can take hold especially when he spooks and boy do you need brakes then! Also he leans on the bit and using this he is much lighter in the hand, I don't need to use it all the time, but it's there if I need it in an emergency if you see what I mean? BTW it's a 6" so nearly as big as yours!

Also went through a few bits and instructor advised this one and it's the best yet!
