My 9yo geldings eyes periodically water really badly. He is not turned out. There doesn't seem to a reason for it. He has the same hay/straw everyday, isn't in a draft etc. It doesn't happen every day, there is no other sort of discharge or pus. They do not seem itchy, or to bother him. It happens more to one than the other. I had his eyes checked when Ibought him 3 weeks ago. Any ideas?

I would get the vet to have a look.

Mine has had watering eyes a few times this winter and each time the vet has diagnosed conjunctivitis and he has needed anti-biotic drops/cream. As this is his first winter in, she queried 'allergic conjunctivitis'. Change of bedding seems to have cured it.

I do feel you can never be too careful with eyes. If he has something in it, you don't want it to scratch the surface and ulcerate.

I would personally get the vet to check him over. I'm always very cautious with eyes after my last horse had bad eye troubles.
Could just be a case he needs some antibiotic drops and that will solve it but it may also be the start of something slightly more serious.

Thanks for that people. I agree vet does seem like only route as there is no obvious pre- disposing cause. If I hadnt had his eyes checked I would be in panic about ERU, but cant be that . At a loss really... Will just call vet
