Hi everyone, I'm having problems with rugs this summer with this lovely wet weather we're having and assuming so is everyone else! I bought a horseware waterproof fly rug liner, thinking this would be the answer but on the 3rd time of wearing it, it slipped right over and was hanging off one side of my horse. This was despite it being attached correctly to the 2 x neck loops and the fillet string loops. (As far as I know this is all the attachments). The rug is fine on its own and never slips but the waterproof liner pulled that over aswell. My poor girl is a bit nervous with rugs anyway so this is the last thing she needed as the waterproof liner material is pretty noisy aswell. She hardly dared breath when it was hanging off her and was a nervous wreck. I e-mailed Horseware about my problems but received no reply, I said I thought they were a good idea but in my experience needed extra attachments to make tham safe. Now the rug has been put away and I daren't put it on again - obviously! Has anyone had a similar experience with this rug? Anyway I have bought her a Rambo supreme lightweight, cost me a fortune but fits really well as have trouble getting rugs to fit her ( very very wide chested). But I am finding she is too hot in this most of the time in the summer. It has no lining but is black so not really the best colour and won't reflect the heat. Anyway my question is can anyone recommend a really really lightweight turnout with not too much coverage of the body (the rambo supreme is quite long on the sides aswell) in which she will not get too hot and also which suits wide chested horses and will not slip back and rub her? Looks like the wet weather is back tonight (having had 2 nights rest from it!) and I'm worrying about what rug to use. She's only rugged up overnight but feel guilty when she's too hot in her lightweight turnout and then can't sleep if its pouring with rain and I know she's soaking in her fly rug! Any advice would be appreciated, I just want to keep her dry but not too hot!
Thanks Lucyx

I use the Buccas sun/shower sheets and find then very good. They are silver so reflect the heat away too. You can use them up to 20 degrees according to the manufacturer, but to be honest, I have been leaving mine with just their fly rugs on in muggy weather, even if it does rain from time to time.

Why not stick with Horseware if you know they fit well but go for an Amigo or Rhino? Cheaper for a lightweight but just as waterproof and you can get lighter colours. They are Nylon lined as well.

I tended to just put a rain sheet on mine, but haven't had the problem as they are out during the night now and rugges up

Also shires do a combo fly rug designed for showers (all in one so no slipping). I would consider this if I didn't pathologically hate combos.

Thanks for all the replies, I’ve tried the amigo but that didn’t fit like the rambo supreme as was too tight around the chest. I like the sound of the Bucas sun shower sheet and the shires waterproof fly rug so think will end up with one of those, can’t decide between the 2 but thanks very much for the suggestions! Does anyone know which would be more suitable between the Bucas and Shires for very very wide chested horses? She’s full thoroughbred but I have to always go for larger sizes just to get the fit around the chest, I’m sure she’d hold the world record for the widest chested full thoroughbred! Thanks Lucyx

I have the Bucas ones for both my horses, and although they're not especially wide-chested they are fairly big horses and the rugs fit well and don't rub. I would say they come up fairly small, so you might have to go for a size bigger than normal.

My only criticism of them would be that the front fastenings are a bit stiff and awkward to use, and the leg straps were too short, so I just use one as a filet strap, and that works well.

I also have Rhino lightweight turnouts, but I have found them too hot for those days when it goes from rainy and chilly to warm and sunny very quickly.

But then, I do think, perhaps we're a bit neurotic, and they'd be fine without rugs on at all!

Thankyou, I think I may leave it until next spring to decide as looks like we're into winter from todays weather! My poor girl was shivering when I did her tonight, she's usually only rugged up at night but may need to start in the day soon aswell! That was despite having access to her stable and charging in at every downpour! I tried my friends shires turnout on today, don't know if they're similar fit to the fly rugs but it was a good fit with plenty of room round the chest. I like the sound of these sunshower rugs though because of being able to use them up to 20C. Not sure if the waterproof fly rug may still be a bit hot on warm days but saying that I prefer that this has a neck cover which the sunshower rug doesn't - big decision!! Thanks again Lucyx
